  • Principia is fit - please don't put those steel forks on it. Please.

  • Nag frame and group is wicked.
But that stem does not work on that frame one bit.
And the thompson seatpost is out of place.
    Confused HHSBer

    This!!

Needs .. Precisa Fork, Deda Newton Stem or similar slimline stem, Newton Shallow Bars to go with the stem or similar "italian" drop bars and a Campagnolo Carbon Post .. in my opinion

and I'm sure the post should be 27.2 not 27mm ?!

  • Got rid of the RainTail. Now in proper winter mode. Fuck you snow.

I think the frame needs to be 2cm bigger also, which is going to be harder to fix with a trip to Wiggle.

  • My Nag is 27 not 27.2 which I found very odd... anyone able to shed some light on tubing?

  • Currently on a splurge on the parts to build up my impending black Bob Jackson arrival...Most of it's sorted (Black frame, gold writing, and the rest of the parts in anything loosely relating silver/chrome/etc....A road well trodden perhaps yet still fun for a novice like me....

Stuck on bartape/saddle/brake hood setups. Any places that accumulate a shitload of old bike photo's all in one place so I can mercilessly copy/take inspiration from another bike?

I'll probably be heading for a Brooks Honey saddle n tape, though what does one do to the brake hoods in such a scenario? Full White hasn't been outruled at this stage, though 'Uncle Bob' (full thread to come in builds once he gets here) is no European Rouabiax vet, more of a dignified English workhorse that happens to look quite handy if pushed...

Is this sort of thing in Debretts?

    or more likely

Though not sure if brown hoods are available for this brake, which would sent me back to the drawing board with the saddle and bar tape conundrum.

My Bob Jackson is 26.8 OD standard 531 and takes 27.0.
I've always just assumed that because track frames are supposed to be rock-hard they just reamed them out less.
I UTFS'd this out of general interest and came up with this.....

27.2mm became the standard seat-post size because most high-end road frames in the 1970s and 1980s were lugged and were almost universally made out of Columbus SL or SLX or Reynolds 531. These seat tubes were 1-1/8” in diameter, or 28.6mm. The single-butted seat tube was 0.9mm thick at the bottom and 0.6mm thick at the top. Well, 2x0.6mm = 1.2mm, which, when subtracted from 28.6mm, yields an I.D. of 27.4mm. However, the tolerance on the wall thickness and roundness of the seat tube made it so that you rarely could fit a 27.4mm post inside, even before brazing. And then, the seat tube always got distorted during brazing, making it even less possible to fit a 27.4mm in there, but a 27.2mm fit nicely. The same goes for why a 27.0mm seat-post was often used on the bigger sizes, which were made out of Columbus SP or SPX, whose seat tubes had 1.0 X 0.7mm wall thicknesses. Because of tolerances, the predicted 27.2mm post (28.6 – 2x0.7 = 27.2mm) never fit, but a 27.0mm fit nicely

  • Brilliant. Go on the forum!
    Thanks.

  • Today I'm fitting a new front derailleur for a colleague at work.

He heard a noise while cycling but kept going.

Here is a picture of the FD. Saw it and thought I would put it on here...

    Fixed!

Black hoods on brown tape is ok. Brown (i.e., gum) hoods on black tape is more classic though. Leather bar tape is rather faux-retro, you see - real retro would be cloth tape. Also acceptable* :

    • White saddle + white tape + black or brown hoods (you might be able to get away with white hoods but I wouldn't do that on a black bike)
    • Black or brown saddle + black tape + black or brown hoods
    • Black everything

Those TRP levers look horrific to my eye but people seem to like 'em.

    • opinions may will vary
  • Good work! One of the best mudguard aesthetics I've seen. Classic looking, evokes this sort of thing...

  • ^^^ Needs a new cable vince.

He said 'don't change anything that doesn't need changing'.

The bike needs a new ower really...

  • ^Haha!

  • Townbike from Spares by The City Gentleman, on Flickr

I haven't ridden this yet, but I'm looking forward to!

  • I'm also looking for a matching CXP33 silver rim for the front. I have a drum brake I'd like to lace it to, 36h. If anyone has one let me know :)

  • ^^ foot retention or a brake?

  • That look awesome!

The kickback will take some time to get used to.

Actually, if you want new levers with brown hoods there aren't many options beyond the Cane Creek SCR-5C. Or you could get a pair of SRAM S500/S900 and some brown Hudz (they call the brown colour 'gold') but they're not a classic-looking lever at all.

And with any of them you're unlikely to match the colour of the tape. :)

  • dan: It's a coaster brake hub.

Ed: Yeah I really wanted to have a go, I understand the principle now I've had it in the stand attached to a bike. However, I broke my thumb yesterday at polo and the boss let me go home early cus of the pain. Riding a new bike whilst off ill isn't really on.

It'll eventually have mudguards, and a massive front rack, the carradice will then be moved to a Brooks and Bagman2. I'm also considering having Ryan fill in the holes and dents from polo and getting it painted.

Glad I did it, that frame always rode far too nicely to die a polo death.

  • Mudguards=good shout

that bike looks like great fun,

  • Got rid of the RainTail. Now in proper winter mode. Fuck you snow.

How did you bodge the front mudguard with a track fork? P-clip? VeloOrange?

  • ^^ foot retention or a brake?

LFGSS, Y U NEVER SPOT COASTER BRAKE?
