A while I ago I asked on this thread where I could get in a cycling holiday in that wouldn't be freezing cold in November. We ended up going to the Canary Islands.

Would anyone be interested in reading about the experience - how much it cost, where we hired bikes, found routes, what the riding was like etc?

It's increasingly the case, as saddle rails get more refined to please weight weenies they are different sizes and shapes.

Are your rails too thin or are they too close together?
they slightly too close together, i am trying to fit the Regal on a 1970s, ttt seat post, maybe use a bit of brute force to bend a rail, but i dont want snappage(is that a word?)

Is it quite old? I've not seen a Regal with the rails too close together for a modern seatpost clamp but I have a pretty old Concor somewhere that is definitely narrower than the modern (~44mm) norm, so I wouldn't be surprised if San Marco made the Regal with narrower rails at some point.

I have more Regals than bikes so let me know if you're looking for something specific.
the seat post is 1970s, but i have a new, cheap selle italia saddle that fits the clamp perfectly! The Regal was bought on Ebay a couple of weeks ago, i presume its not NOS, but modern repo. It has the World champ rainbow colours on either side saddle with sanmarco written on top by rivets!

So my colleague wants to start cycling to work (30-35mins commute through london) and he has got all keen and ask me what “kit” he needs.

As a non-cyclist he obviously doesn't want to spend much money. The thing that has thrown me is he’s asking lots of questions about clothes.

What do you think the core list is?

• Lock (on-guard brute)
  
• Lights (cheapo deal off ebay)
  
• Helmet (debatable I know, but let’s just put it in there)
  
• Jacket (which one? If you only have one?)
  
• Trousers/shorts? What would you suggest?
  
• Shoes (trainers)

Clothing is so personal, I'd advise getting cheap stuff to start, just to get to know what you like. I personally can't wear anything with long sleeves for more than 15 mins as I start burning up, even just cruising. (And its not just because I'm unfit.)

is he likely to become a "competitive commuter"? If not, then no need for much specialist stuff. just be sensible about wearing breathable fabrics (merino ftw), trousers that allow the right kind of leg movement and can be tucked into socks or clips. shoes - lightweight low-cut hikers or trail-running trainers are better than normal trainers as they might offer a bit more protection in the rain and wet. I think the most important thing is not being miserable in the winter. decent gloves and a lightweight rain/windproof jacket that can be kept in a bag easily and isn't too much of a sweat-fest, and finally some waterproof over-trousers for really bad conditions, as cheap as possible. I like my Gore Pac lite jacket but I can't seem to find it online now...

If he's interested in "lights so bright I can't possibly not be seen", I did my first commute using a MagicShine MJ-880 front and MJ-818 rear this week. Got both with a 6-cell Li-ion battery for £150 delivered, via an eBay seller. Bargain.

Yeah I have one, been using it for about 6 months now, I think it's fantastic for the money. It's been great in the last few weeks, I wear it with just a long sleeved uniqlo baselayer thing underneath, and it's plenty warm enough once you've got started - definitely for cold weather not warm. It's water-resistant enough for anything that isn't very extreme; I've stopped bothering carrying my old fully waterproof jacket. Regarding breathability, it's not bad at all, a huge amount better than any fully waterproof stuff I've tried, but it could do with having pit zips. I'm pleased I got it.

Disclaimer - I've never tried any particularly expensive cycling jackets, it may suck in comparison.

If by 'slight;y' you mean a couple of mm, just spring it apart. They are often that far out because they can't be bothered to make them very precisely, it's just a big bit of bent wire. Snappage must be a word, you wrote it and we all understood what you meant.
