Tubs

    Disclaimer:
Needless to say this thread may overlap other threads to certain extent; a quick search reveals that many questions regarding tubular rims, tires and wheelsets have already been asked and answered a hundred times...

~~Just a suggestion. If you want this to be an all-inclusive tub thread you should probably ask the mods to change the name. I would suggest something that would cover all search terms and be immediately clear to anyone just looking at the list of thread titles.

I would also have a look at especially informative tub threads and maybe see if they can be merged into this one if the.~~

EDIT: isn't that what this thread is for?

Sorry, not trying to sound negative. It's a nice thought but it seems like a duplication of a thread that's already 7 pages long.

Was merely hoping to start a tread dedicated to riding tubular for future reference, which the said thread isn’t. As stated in the disclaimer there maybe an overlap with existing threads, but personally I believe the forum would benefit from a generic “one size fits all” tubular thread, rather than having to go through hundreds of individual postings - some dating back 6 years.

Still, whether or not to merge threads is out my hands; I certainly never meant to step on anyone’s toes.

  • Go the Robert Millar way and use clinchers but with tubulars instead of inner tubes.

  • A recent convert by chance rather than design. I've got Veloflex Roubaix glued to Monthlery Pros. Best tyres I've ever ridden.

Available here at a reasonable price

  • As soon as I have the right hubsmoney to spare I'm building up a couple of pairs of retro red&gold label Mavic GP4s. Dark anodised ftw.

  • generally better all around, only downside is if you get a flat and the price of the tyres. you can run at lower pressure for more comfort, higher pressure for TTing, ride when punctured. gonna have to build me a set. maybe ambrosio on dura ace mmmmm

  • oh, and always glue.

  • oh, and always glue.

That’s what my instinct tells me. Have you ever had an “Oh shit, should have used glue” incident?

I’m lead to believe that tape isn’t even allowed on the track, yet, allegedly so, on the road you’re fine!

Could be completely wrong and admittedly I’m not really sure about the science behind it, but as a rider it certainly feels like cornering on the road at high speed puts a lot more strain on your tires than the steepest track in the world ever could.

  • fall off on a track and you'll hurt yourself

fall of on road and you could kill yourself

i know people who have used tape, i never have. glue may be messy and a bit more time consuming but i reckon it's safer and more secure. i think people use tape as they don't know how to properly glue a tyre/rim. and cornering on a track doesn't have as much force as the track has banking/camber, which roads don't have. roll-off is not nice.

  • Need more wheels!

Obviously you can always do a quick emergency swap in case of a puncture or whatever. So what, I might be old school, but to me properly mounting a tubular tire is still a 10-hour process.

Glue is a pain in the ass though, but not sure I trust tape.

    PS
Not too keen on getting killed either, that must be nearly as painful as being overtaken :-)

  • Was offered 8 Vittoria Corsa Elite tubular tires (290TPI ) for £250 (£31.25) each, which needless to say I couldn't pass.

As they would, Vittoria claims "...an ideal balance between performance, durability and ease of use [Whatever that means???]". Look great too (all black finish) with my Campy Pista wheelset.

Would be cool to hear your thoughts if you have any experience with these tires - I know, as if it really matters, since I already pulled the trigger.

    Cheers, Lynch

  • I always glue tires for the track, but i have a front wheel that is taped, and it have worked great for the total of 6hours i have used it so far (50degree banking)

  • Against my instinct I'm tempted to try it; I so hate glue.

Was lead to believe that tape wasn't allowed on the track - evidently that isn't true?

Are you using tape on the road?

  • Never used tape, don't think I ever will. Gluing isn't that hard, spending an hour each evening gluing a rim or tyre isn't really a chore.
Only started riding tubulars in the last few month after having a set of rims in the house for far too long. Brand new Campag pista hubs on black Omega Vs, Vittoria Rallys are the only tyres I've tried as a foray into it but they ride better than any clinchers I've ever used. Will be getting a set of Corsa Evo CXs in the near future.

Tape isn't allowed on the track (well, not at Manchester, anyway.)

I use tape on the road and it's fine - (Tufo Extreme is amazing stuff.)

  • Road bike:
Zipp 606 pair with Continental Competitions, glued

    Fixed bike:
Chinese carbon 90mm rear/60mm front, Continental Gatorskins, taped.

I've noticed no difference between taping or gluing.

I've put many more miles on the Conti Competitions than the Gators, but the Gators have been mainly in-town mileage and I've punctured both fhe front and the rear in the first week of use.

Both "fixed" using PitStop, both now holding air as if nothing ever happened.

  • "... whether or not to merge threads is out my hands..."

    Fixed!

  • You’re probably already convinced of tubular tires superiority over clinchers in terms of performance.

Clinchers didn't stop Tony Martin becoming World TT Champ.

  • I thought langy had tubs. Could kind tell, but then again I couldn't. I could say they felt different but then it could be placebo effect.

I'd to get some tubs to race on to see if i can feel any benefit.

~~Don't take the bait, don't take the bait, don't take the bait...

    Your point being?

    D'oh!~~

    Go Martin!

    Not at Glasgow either because...

fall off on a track and you'll hurt yourself

fall of on road and you could kill yourself

Roll a tub on the road and you'll damage your wheel.

Roll a tub on the track and you'll damage the track and I will kill you.

  • "...Roll a tub on the track and you'll damage the track and I will kill you."

    The war on Britain's tracks...

  • Maybe this rule against using tape on track was started before tufo realesed their tape ? , when only Velox jantex tub tape was avaible ?, Jantex is not as secure as the Tufo, has anyone witnessed someone roll of a tire on the track using tufo tape ?

  • First puncture in 10 years this morning, and I didn't bring a spare :-( Still you can roll home on a flat, another great advantage of tubular tires :-)

  • 10 years!? What tyres/mileage we talking here.
