Volvo started development of the 850 and the modular 4/5/6 whiteblock before the Ford purchase, the 850 was the last "pure" Swedish car they made in terms of designed, developed and produced by an entirely "Volvo" team. The S/V70 had a lot of Ford input.
However, the V/S90 platform continued into the Ford era complete with driven rear wheels.
