Also, traffic is a problem when it's in your way, but when it's overtaking you it generates a nice draughting effect - this is the main reason why we now have traffic count restrictions on TT courses. In the olden days, the traffic difference between early (6am) and late (8am) starters on busy roads was big enough to affect the result, to the extent that some people who fancied their chances of a prize would DNS if they got given an early number.
