What if my laptop's turned off?
-
• #3678
would need to be switched on.

Cheers dog!

although my setup would just start when you turn the laptop on and if anything was ready to go it would just get on with it.

Awesome setup. Does usenet work over proxies? I'm with Virgin* so don't want to be too obvious with what I do with my bandwidth
*absolutely pants

Oh, Hatbeard, if you wanna pm me details of that wondrous setup that'd be much appreciated!

*"is it worth extending my MBP's one year warranty?...
Anyway, worth extending?" *
Yes, Yes, Yes !
Mine had the same problem (it was running very hot and kept crashing) and I had it repaired under the extended warranty which meant a new motherboard and display (I think the cost would have been £800 or so if I'd had to pay for it). As an aside it is pretty shoddy that it added an extra £200 on to the cost of an expensive laptop but that's another tale.

most usenet providers use ssl. but giganews (the rapha of usenet) offer a vpn service with their top tier account plus a handful of other stuff. not cheap but cheaper than a digital tv subscription still.
will dig out some guides for you and write up some notes when I'm at home over the weekend.

Hah!

Another quick question... Someone at work just told me you can't download torrents from places like isohunt.com on macs.
This can't be true?

Astraweb is much cheaper and a bit slower with the dmca takedowns too
-
• #3691
I have giganews as my primary provider but i use astraweb pay-go as my backup server on sabnzbd to get any missing files from takedowns on GN.

I picked up an unlimited astraweb thingie when it was on offer on HUKD. Pretty good, plenty of content. Just using nzbs (dot) org to find things that are usually genuine.

So if I install that on my MBP I can access my iTunes library from my iPad?
You can do that anyway by sharing your iTunes library on the network and switching to it on the iPad.
And if you download the Remote app you can also control your computer's iTunes app. -

nzbmatrix.com is worth the £7 lifetime vip membership as it hooks into most software scripts if you want to automate things.

I hate that newzbin has been blocked by my ISP, nzbmatrix is pretty decent though.

Suggestions with an email problem that we think is down to the Mac stuff we use. - the Genius bar were stumped.
Anyway...
My wife has an NTL email account. Depending on which device she uses to send emails the recipient either gets her name or my name listed as the sender. I don't have an NTL email and never had.
On the imac at home the email recipient gets her name listed as the sender.
On her ipad3 the email recipient gets my name as the sender
On her iphone5 the email recipient gets my name as the sender
If she logs into her NTL email account on my mpb then the email recipient gets her name as the sender. Why would this happen? The NTL email is a web based email acount and they device used to access the account shouldn't have any affect on what name the recipient see's.
The ipad was bought in June and she got the phone in October. It has be something with the way she set them up but I don't know what nor do the genius bar guys as I said earlier.
Any suggestions on what we can do to rectify this? She's getting annoyed that her emails appear to be sent from me!
She doesn't want to set up a new email address as she's had the NTL for years and its printed on business cards etc.
If you can offer any help it would be much appreciated, please explain in simple terms as I'm a bit slow with these kind of things.

When you say listed as the sender you me in the 'from' line, or do you mean the signature?

Ripit is very good.
^^yes and any films/tv you ahem acquire as well. although the ios app is a couple of quid to help fund dev costs i think.
i have a very nice setup whereby my favourite films/tv shows are automatically downloaded off usenet when it becomes available, it's categorised, metadata and episode info is downloaded and it then updates the media library automatically so i can stream it directly on my iphone/ipad/lg smart tv/xbox. I even get a notification message on my iphone whenever a new item is available to watch. zero intervention needed on my part.
pm me if you want the specifics, you need to pay for usenet access (~£7-15/mo unlimited access or pay-per-gb) but it beats any other 'media' solution i've seen hands down.
