  • Went to bed at 12, and almost 4 hours later I'm still wide awake if not more.

I find it humorous how my natural reaction is to think: well I'm not 'trying' hard enough.
Every time i change sides I think, ok, this is it this time, really give it everything and concentrate on feeling sleepy.
Reminds me of the Simpsons Movie when Homer is whipping the huskies and shouting "Rest!" with every whip.

That's it, this has been going on long enough, I will buy some sleeping pills tomorrow.
I know they're a chemical solution to a cognitive problem, but they work.

I get this a lot. Usually at the worst times - need to be up early, something important the next day etc. I've given up on the "try harder" mentality, if you're going to fall asleep, just being in bed will be enough, if you're not, there's no "right" position to be in, you just won't sleep

I give myself 30mins, an hour max to fall asleep, if I don't , I get up, read a book, watch a film, something fun. Better to spend 4 hours doing something enjoyable rather than thrashing in bed getting angry. I've tried to label the sleeplessness as free time to stop being negative about it. Working up to going for a midnight bike ride but I can never face getting dressed again.

This works for me at the moment but it has taken 15 years of thrashing in bed insomnia to do it. YMMV
