I think once the little arrow on the surface is no longer visible, that's your cue, although in practice they can go a lot longer than that. I get about a year out of mine. If you're unclipping unintentionally, definitely change them ASAP.
Careful on the new ones for a week or two, they'll feel pretty sticky until they've worn in a bit...
