• @Mu Mu: Judging by your username, you're either Bill Drummond of Jimmy Cauty and I claim my five pounds.

Correct! I have burnt your five pounds in memory of that pointless publicity stunt we pulled ages ago.

  • Welcome back, tynan.

  • Anyone know how you look up regs?

Just had an adisson Lee cab make an illegal turn out of Euston straight through myself and a bunch of other pedestrians crossing on a green Man.

It was a Ford galaxy and the reg was Lp60... possibly LNO.

  • The Met Police policy is to sit on their hands and do nothing unless someone is killed or seriously injured- chalk it up to experience.

  • did the car make contact? if so the police are more likely to take action

also report it to addison lee, they might be getting drivers who receive complaints from cyclists take part in some cyclist awareness training

  • An addy lee motor hung back until the road was wider, and overtook me with lots of space the other week.
Just to redress the balance, I heard somewhere they were receiving training in such matters.

  • Yep, they have been getting training.

  • think it worth contacting addison themselves about this incident, businesses are likely to make a difference than the police.

  • An addy lee motor hung back until the road was wider, and overtook me with lots of space

think it worth contacting addison themselves about this incident,

Damn right. They'll likely sack him on the spot!

  • I have video evidence, thank god. I got cctv from the shop over the road, police couldn't have cared less, ambulance were lovely.
I will not put it here, nor explain the circumstances on an open board.
Thanks tom, I'll be okay. Beckanham road, by the hump bridge to teh traffic lights at the station

Outside clockhouse? It's that typical situation where you're a bit slower due to the hill and drivers overtake not realise you might speed up when it's shock horror downhill, made worse by commuters late for their train...

I had a similar thing with blind crossing pedestrians on whitechapel road last week and the response my housemates gave on viewing the video - "you have to be careful and slow down and not ride like a car"... ?????

  • Yeah by clock house, but i was coming up the inside, not outside, filtering towards the lights as they'd just gone green and traffic was just moving again, as dude runs out blindly from the left side of the road, infront of a van, and then collides with me coming up the right side of the van.

  • I was on Clapham high street, at the junction outside Chapham Common tube (I think), there was no car in front of me, there was however a car waiting to turn right. Oncoming traffic was heavy so I thought I better slow down in case a nutter driver wants to turn right, which would crash right into me. As predicted, oncoming drivers didn't give a shit about me (or any other cyclists I am sure), nor didn't they care the fact that I was going straight and that I should have priority, and of course they were tailgating one after another. I finally lost my patience and there was a sort of enough window for me to go, so I did, and of course the last driver didn't want to give way and he very nearly hit me. I shouted and he shouted back indicated there was red light and that I shouldn't have moved forward. Yes, red light it was, but the light had just changed and to be fair, I was already in the junction and he was just entering, so if I shouldn't have carried on, neither should he. As a result of that 5 seconds of shouting at each other and he wouldn't let me go, I had to give way and was left right in the middle of the junction. Luckily the driver coming from my left side of the junction was understanding, and probably saw the whole thing, he waited for me to go first.

What will it really take for drivers to learn that cyclists have just as much rights as them?

  • Do you know much about body language? By slowing down you were giving the signal to the oncoming drives that you were submitting to them and letting them go. If you had looked them right in the eye and carried on pedalling I suspect they would have stopped and let you go.
Having said that, always give yourself enough room to stop - just in case....

  • Last time I did that, I a van crashed right into me. Whatever he took my eye contact as, only he knew.Admittedly, I am still anxious at junctions 6 months after... Besides, with the last driver who near hit me, we did make eye contact, but he obviously thought I signalled him to go. Like I said, a few cars where tailgating each other, nobody looked, I guess if I were driving a car, I might have ended up in the same situation.

  • With body language it's the whole package. The eye contact is just part of it. Sadly though, drivers are more likley to take notice of a ton and half of steel than a few lbs of flesh and bone.
Ideally, in the above situation, I would be looking to move off from the lights as quickly as possible to firmly establish my right of way although it's easy to say these things from the comfort of a keyboard. In the real world it's all about survival.
Have you had any cycle training btw. It may be worth a session or 2 if for no other reason than to restore your confidence!

  • I once did that very British polite thing with a driver who was making a right turn into a car park while I was going straight. I was slowing down anyway for something up ahead so gave him the "after you" nod to which he replied with a "no, not at all, after you" nod, then I did another "no, certainly not, wouldn't dream of it, after you" nod and then at some point we both did the "oh alright so kind of you, thank you so much" movement forward at the same time right towards each other. I can't remember how we both managed to escape in the end but I seem to remember the dance being a long and protracted one.

Anyway, the moral of the story is that eye contact and body language are definitely only part of the story and you need to make decisive and obvious actions in traffic so as not to leave as little to interpretation as possible. Goes back to what wvm says about firmly establishing right of way - if you're hesitant then people tend to interpret it as a deliberate pause to let them proceed, especially if you're making eye contact with them at the same time. In the main I don't make eye contact with drivers unless I'm actively negotiating with them, and if I've got priority that only really happens when I'm giving way as a courtesy. I still watch their cars (especially the wheels) to make sure I know if they're going to pull into me, though.

  • (read bottom to top)

    Councils are the problem. basically.

  • Bloody hell, I'm tempted to email and ask Slough Council for a press statement regarding that...

  • maybe someone with twitter can respond directly to them?

  • Yeah by clock house, but i was coming up the inside, not outside, filtering towards the lights as they'd just gone green and traffic was just moving again, as dude runs out blindly from the left side of the road, infront of a van, and then collides with me coming up the right side of the van.

I saw you crossing the road afterwards (fraid I didn't see the crash itself) but wasn't sure if you'd come off or what. Should have stopped and asked probably.

EDIT: would have been about quarter past eight?

  • i already told them they're a bunch of morons, but that was hardly constructive

  • Yeah about that time. No worries about not stopping :)

Pannone are taking on my case NW-NF. Thankfully.

  • Oh yes, I finally wrote up the email I got from roadsafe over a year ago about how to give them a video sucessfully - linky to my blog post on it - http://goo.gl/cNN1V

  • Half of all cyclists been knocked of their bikes in London says Standard.
    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/half-of-cyclists-knocked-off-bikes-by-vehicles-in-london-says-survey-8305950.html

I wonder what percentage of drivers would say they've hit a cyclists in London

  • Nagging feeling that their ulterior motive is to increase the insurance rate for those who ride bicycle.
