Ok, I understand vintage bike prices are going up etc, but would someone please tell me why this is over 1.5k?
Is it something super duper rare or what?
-
• #44119
It must be rare because it says so in the title.

That's probably worth over 2K, a very rare bike.
Although it's not really a speed six as such, the safari was even more rare, it was the topline of the 'S' Series. Lots of people love these shit heaps from the 60's. Why? Who knows... -

I owned a SpeedFour for a while, it shits all over any other 60s shopper bike that I've ridden. Really nippy, excellent handling (better than any other small-wheeled bike I've ridden, which is a few), frame's stiffer than you'd expect so you can honk on it (stiffer than your traditional 3-speed step-through frame e.g. Raleigh Caprice), and the suspension makes it quite plush.
They're good bikes. The SpeedFour is not nearly as expensive, though - I think I bought mine for £100 and sold it for about the same, they crop up on ebay sometimes. I don't know why the SpeedSix is so much more expensive - rarity, I suppose, and a cult following. Much like how we'll spend hundreds on Campagnolo and NJS-stamped components for a street bike when Deore will do.
Hmm...
Ugly as sin: check.
Absurd stem arrangement: check.
Ape-like proportions: check.
Rack-mungous: check.
Brooks: check.
Probably go up a brick wall: check.
It's got Ed written all over it.
