Based on no experience and little knowledge I'm say it'll be fine!
Heh, I've bought an 80s MTB (see two pages back, although it's very similar to tommmmmmmmmmmm's) although I'll still buy the touring frame (if it's available, waiting to hear from seller) to become my sensible road bike. The MTB can take 2.1 tyres apparently (so probably 1.9 with guards) which is significantly fatter. Plus it has double eyelets front and rear and low-rider bosses so it should handle my camping gear better than the 70s tourer, too.
Plan is: if it fits well, do some tests carrying a bunch of bricks around, then new Spa Cycles wheelset, tyres, MTB-specific drop bars, bar-end shifters, secondhand panniers and away we go. Should be able to do everything for £300-400, which means I won't have to sell my road bike to fund it.
