US Election 2012

  • I hear some interviews with some American residents, one woman claimed Romney would protect the US against terrorists attacks, good luck with that one lady.
It's sad and worrying that people beleive this, and they think they live in a free world...

  • This Greg Palast report maybe of interest:

As in all recent elections, Ohio again is a crucial state to win for either presidential candidate. And once again, Ohio is at the center of charges of systematic suppression of the African-American vote. In a report for Democracy Now!, investigative reporter Greg Palast discovers that some early voters in the Buckeye State have received the wrong ballots. Palast is the author of "Billionaires & Ballot Bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps."

  • According to the BBC from earlier today Ohio should be called at around 12.30 our time.

  • Indiana, Kentucky (Romney) & Vermont (Obama), as expected.

    19-3 to Romney

  • Indiana for Romney - no surprise there

  • SuperPrecise (aka SP) recently stated on this very forum that if Romney is elected he is 'giving up' on America. I personally don't think the US could cope with such a crippling blow to its morale in these difficult times.

It was a flippant thing to say and something that I regret. It was irresponsible and vindictive to burden the people of the United States with such a gloomy news.

  • West Virginia and South Carolina called for Romney.

    33-3 Romney.

  • The race analysis is so interesting, it helped swing the vote to the Republicans so often, so many years ago.

  • Bam!

A load more states in (no surprises or swing states yet).

    56-40 to Obama

  • People said that about Gore and George W. It's cobblers, just as it was cobblers when people were saying it didn't matter if Labour or Conservative won here.

The rest of my post though contained The Guardian article, which supports what I said - I have no doubt both candidates would follow the course it explains. Clearly it makes a difference who is elected, but there are fundamentals that will remain in place regardless.

  • Yes nothing surprising yet - I agree the Hispanic stuff is fascinating. I suspect that if Romney loses that the republicans will have to rethink and kick out the loons or disappear off the electoral map

It was Eisenhower (republican) who first warned about the military industrial complex, back in '59

  • ^^ How would they disappear off the electoral map? They would need to be replaced by something and there is nothing that could replace them as there is no way another political organisation could build the amount of support financially or in terms of people willing to vote for them. Even if Romney looses tonight it is still pretty likely that they will return a majority in congress and senate. At least that is my understanding.

  • Come on Obama!

  • Bbc has 54 Obama Romney 40
ITV has Obama 64 Romney 82,
NYT has Obama 51 Romney 40

Not sure where ITV gets their figure from

  • Bobbo - they would be unelectable without the Hispanic vote - demographically they rely on the middle aged affluent white men and women . They would have to change to get elected in the same way that the Tories here lost three elections because they'd shifted to the Eurosceptic right. The Tories now are a 'triumph' of marketing.

  • You're assuming that the Hispanic vote will reach its full potential, the vast majority of young people in that demographic who are eligible to vote do not. I am not saying that this is not going to change but it is not currently showing any signs of doing so and certainly not in the next four or probably eight years.

ITV is probably counting the projected returns that are looking fairly certain.

I'd like to see the break up of the 2 party system.

There are plenty of other parties out there, just in this election there are 4 more standing:

    Constitution (Christian right)
    Libertarian (Economically right, socially left)
    Green
    Justice (Left)

There are people with money behind these, and other parties, but the FPTP system just doesn't allow them to get voted in, with 2 big parties.

  • The democrats got through it before but this time change will be unavoidable.

  • Yes it's a much more trigger happy station is ITV.
Interesting point about the Hispanic vote - that's probably right that the 'natural' Democrats are more likely not to vote. Much the same with the Black vote at this point but I think that the democraphics are against the Republican party in future elections and that has their long-term strategists running scared.

  • 'I'd like to see the break up of the 2 party system'. Absolutely agree but the limiting factor will be the money - danger is that the break up of the two party system hits the Democrats hardest- as it did with Ralph Nader in 2000

  • i know posting this is a cliche, but fuck it...
