Everything in my workroom is in random piles. Organised using the 'closeline' method.
Place arm on shelf
Walk to the left or right to compact shelf contents.
The only clear surface is the blue tool organiser sheet I bought 4 years ago, and still have put so much as a hook in (right of pic).
In my small office I have months and months of secret purchases. Carbon ski poles, a crankset, pedals.......etc.
I'm only allowed a fat lefty fork from Mrs Smallfurry, for Crimbo, if I tidy it though. As I bought said fork a month or so ago. I guess I'd better.
