Don't start wedging stuff on your bike, bolt it on.

Activesport for Middleburns.
Otherwise raceface or shimano external cranks and cheap bb. Don't really need to spend more than £30 on a bb to get a decent one.
Hope are nice though but that extra cash could go towards something else for your bike... -

I'm very happy with my hope BB, but as I've never used another external BB, I've got nothing to compare it to.
Jimmy said go for steel bearings rather than ceramic, based on returns he's had. I've had no issues with the steel ones.
-

I'm going steel. The ceramic ones would probably be okay for polo, I reckon it's the seals on the ceramic ones we had back and I can't be sure how long they were ridden etc...
I'll probably use my Shimano BB until it gives out, which isn't far away and I've only had it a year :/

Hope BB is too much. lots to look at and consider here though, thanks for the suggestions. it'll probably end up being shimano or if it's middleburn, something second hand. with my height (5'8" I think), are 175mm cranks too long?

What's your inside leg measurement?
-
• #4058
around 30"
-
• #4059
Lennard Zinn would say, following the 21 - 21.6 % rule, to use 160-165mm cranks.
Check your inside leg though.
Also, it might well be bollocks.
-
• #4060
yeah, just used a random online calculator, told me 160mm. bollocks, there's lots of good stuff on pinkbike. meh

I use a cheap road bike external bb on my mountain bike which regularly ends up in peat bogs, jet washed and / or abandoned in the cellar still covered in mud. They last about 4 to 6 months.
If I was spending Hope money on one I'd expect it to last a lifetime on a polo bike

i've been using a dura-ace road BB on my polo bike (in its various forms) for about 2 years now, it's silky smooth still. only cost £30. I swap it over onto my mountain bike occasionally too.
-
• #4064
yeah i am going to buy dura ace soon. i put an old deore one on my 14 in January and its still good.
-
• #4065
Whoa, DA on a polobike!
-
• #4066
DA will only come with a road spacerbungthing though so keep your Deore mtb one (the bit that goes between the cups/covers the axle)

I got an XTR external BB for €21 from bikediscount.de.
You should be able to find XT M770 and a good single-specific chain ring on eBay for less than £100 total.
Just saved you the cost of a Thomson twinset. ;-)

• #4068
What does it weigh though?
