  • My new Paperwhite arrived. Very nice it is too... bit of a fingerprint magnet though.

Will look forward to giving it a read this evening. Already though, the screen responds much quicker than my 3G keyboard model.

  • Mine haven't arrived yet, maybe tomorrow.

  • The screen is a cheat though. They only properly wipe it every 3rd or 4th page turn. You can change that in the settings

  • ^for someone who lives in deptford you're not very good at the crime are you...

Just don't need to commit crime. There is a difference.

  • Just got my kindle, didn't realised the light stay on all the time.

  • what? even when its on standby?

surely you'd want it on all the time if you're a slow reader, not just when you're flipping pages no?

  • Sorry, not on standby, even when you set the option to the lowest brightness when you can't see the light, it become obvious in a pitch black room*

    *read: power cut.

  • Ah I see... I quite fancy getting one. Too many other things I "need" though.

Dibs yours when you get bored of it.

  • Just don't need to commit crime. There is a difference.

    bloody 1%er

@ed can you not hold down the power button to shut it off if you really need the light to go off?

  • Dibs yours when you get bored of it.

Can't imagine Scoble getting rid of his. I think he's kindles out live his bikes 3:1 so you'll be buying it this time next year.

  • This is the first kindle I've considered after my keyboard one. Mainly down to the light.

But as I'm going to be rather busy over the next few months I don't really want to buy one just yet.

  • I need to buy (any) one for my ma's birthday next month. Completely forgot I'd 'promised' her one.

    FUUU...

  • Dibs yours when you get bored of it.

You can have my old one.

  • I've got a kindle. Lent it to my ma when she was ill.

She never gave it back, so I said I'd buy her one for her birthday, in order to get mine back. So I kind of need a new one. Any discounts about? Doesn't matter what model, as long as it's new / boxed etc.

  • Didn't tesco have something going where they'd give you £10 off plus you'll get cashback. If your a new user to tesco on line you also get £10 off.

    Here;

  • can't see how to get £10 off for being new (no emails or anything) and I added a torch to the order to allow me to have the £10 off, which now doesnt work, and the torch costs £3 to deliver, and I have to pick up the kindle.

I'll just go bloody buy one.

  • Kindle paperwhite v Kindle fire HD

I'm thinking of buying a e-reader, and have fallen into the same trap a lot of halfwits will be falling into I guess. The paperwhite is a nice size, a nice weight, and has mega battery life. The fire HD has all the nice flashy features of a tablet. Both are so similar in price (at least for someone planning to own them for few couple years) that the chioce is a tricky one.

If my main use is reading, and I already own a 11" thinkpad laptop. Surely I want the paperwhite? If the reading experiance of the fire HD is notably less comfortable the deal will be sealed.

Grateful for any input from the sacred forum hive mind.

  • Can't compare directly, but paperwhite is so much nicer to read on than my iandipad

Amazon make a song'n'dance about the laminated screen on the Fire HD. But then dont say whether this is focused for colour video watching or reading. In fact I havent seen the screen in standard e-reader mode.

If the e-reader screen is the same as any other tablet. I'll definitely just get the paperwhite.

  • If it's just for reading I'd go with a kindle every time. Tablets are awesome but I've spent hours reading my kindle and can't imagine I'd want to do the same with an LCD screen.

  • Slowfurry, e-reader.

For one simple reason is that it's an e-reader, simply to read book in.

I find myself occasionally going online while reading books, or playing a games, a little more distracting on the tablet, whether an e-reader is much more relaxing to sit down and read a book.

What I do miss is the small home button on the bottom of the Kindle, which the new one doesn't have any physical button.

  • E-ink display make it easier to read than an LCD for a longer period of time, much more relaxing than a tablet.

  • Cheers. Paperwhite it is.

I thought maybe the Fire HD had an E-ink setting or something.

Would make sense if its doable.

  • That would be great if it had an e ink setting.
