  • If you have an old watch strap you mount it on that. I tried it with an old Animal one, it works well, but is quite big. Sticking it in a pocket is easier and, if you don't have a pocket, you'll have to get inventive...

  • Here's the video I found that suggested it. Having said to you that it worked well, I went for a run this morning and forgot to start the Garmin for the first 1.5m, then it had a wobbly moment halfway through and decided that I didn't run that extra mile but did a perfectly straight line. Bah.

  • I just finished re-reading this book:
Feet in the Clouds: A Tale of Fell-Running and Obsession: A Story of Fell Running and Obsession: Amazon.co.uk: Richard Askwith: Books

    I love hills.

And that is a truly great book.

Such a great book. I'm not running at the moment due to a back problem and it's making me crazy. Anyone recommend any other great running books to read while I'm stuck on the couch?

  • Well not running, but I know you like swimming so Waterlog is pretty much incredible for that...
(though chances are you've read it already)
And for cycling- Tim Krabbe's The Rider.

  • 9.03 miles in 1.22, according to my Endomondo Pro. So maybe I'll achieve my goal of 10 miles in 1.30 next Sunday? We'll see.

  • Cardiff half in 1:45:08 - was aiming for 1:45, but will take the extra 8 seconds happily enough.

Next target - 1:40 in Malta in spring.

  • Well done!

  • Nice half time that well done.
Came third in my 6k 240m climb Shillingstone hill race, beating good friend I went up with by 3 seconds.60 mins, well happy I reckon the titanium screws on the skull helped, was working setting up and taking down course too so got a good big distance in all day in forest really, still no mushrooms about though!

  • That first sentence required three scans before the meaning jumped out at me. Are you sure you didn't find mushrooms?

  • ...still no mushrooms about though!

Breaking the 100 minute barrer. Very decent target.

I've now officially slowed due to my weight gain. Pushed myself around my usual sunday run, at my old pace, and near expired. My carves informed me of every extra gram on the way up the 400+ steps, and my knees confirmed the numbers on the way down the hill on the other side.

Winter is well and truely in the air up here. It was only 3C during my last run. Looking forward to the dark and heavy going, snow runs of winter TBH.

  • I remember months back when I first started reading this thread and doing Parkrun that you were all (seemingly) talking about barefoot running. I am halfway through Born to Run and am now intrigued. Is it still a thing, or has it all been disproved?

  • Try it.

I'm running in Asics DS Trainers. Which are a shite load lower, and less cushioned then I'm used to. But they seem to work really well with an adjusted stride.

I still use my Kayanos, which I run differently in. IMHO mixing things up is good way to keep your running interesting, and your legs injury free.

My next trainer purchase may well be a pair of barefoot style trail shoes. I could'nt do less cushioning and support than the DS's on tarmac.

  • That's sort of what I'd thought: rather than declaring it to be the solution, throwing out my shoes and switching over, I considered getting some minimal shoes and doing the odd short run in the park as a trial.

I like the idea of varying runs, just as I vary bike rides.

  • Something like this

  • What are they? Apart from fugly, I mean.

I think its quite common to use them for quicker shorter runs. Then use your shoes of chioce for the mile munching. I tend to have 4 pairs of running shoes on the go. It get a bit like the bike n+1 thing. My excuse is the varying trail conditions, and varying tarmac miles.

If anything they make you feel fast. Like when you climb off your commuting bike, and get on your weekend roadie.

  • What are they? Apart from fugly, I mean.

They're just supportlees, cushionless shoes from Vivafoot. Just with some tread for mud.

Just an example. I'd rather get Inov8s. As i get on with their treads.

    Worth a browse....

  • I'm still on my first pair of proper running shoes, but probably need to pop into a Runners' World and have a look around.

  • The way I look at it. Trainers wear out. Cushioned tarmac running shoes at a pretty specific rate. Having more trainers spreads the wear, and can in fact reduce it, by having more suitable trainers for each type of running/conditions etc.

    I have....

Asics DS trainer - Fast pavement runs.
Asics Kayano - Long pavement runs
    Inov8 Roclite GTX - wet/cold trail runs
Montrail Leona Divide - Dry/hard surface trail runs

Both the trail shoes are well cushioned and supportive. Hence my desire for something lower and more flexible.

Or maybe I should get some studded jobbies. Near killed myself a couple of times last winter.

  • I suggest you to go for a 4mm drop shoes and not a 0mm drop in the beginning.
And try to switch with small frequent runs to get the calves muscles used to the new movements, it's bloody painful in the beginning.
I started the switch to forefoot running with a pair of Brooks PureCadence and apart from the awful colors they come with I found them pretty good.

And if you didn't already, watch this:

  • Anyone doing Surrey League XC this weekend? I'm looking forward to my first full XC season since 08/09. Pity I'm unfit, but still looking forward to it :)

  • Any mileage in trying to land on front of foot rather than heel in current shoes?
