The Ledus Wheelus lights look awesome. Quick question for those that have them -
Are they just attached by cable ties? If so, is it not a bit annoying to remove every time you lock up your bike??I really don't need new lights.... but these look too fun

yeah, just cable ties. I think I'm going to go down the route that monkeylectric suggested when they started, which was using a strand of wire to lash the light to one of the spokes.
I'll see if I can find their pdf on how they suggested that this was done.
monkeylectric now send out a metal cable tie with theirs, but I have no idea where one might get one of them!

Isn't a metal cable tie just a jubilee clip (hose clip)? If so, every hardware shop will have one, though you'd need a screwdriver to take it off.-
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=jubilee+clip&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=11658249032225629076&sa=X&ei=fnh1UJbgAeS40QWVzIHwBg&ved=0CC0Q8gIwAQYou can buy re-useable cable ties (plastic) from most hardware shops. They don't last forever, as eventually the mechanism dies, but they would last a good while and are quick and easy.

A jubilee clip would do the trick, IF you can get one small enough to go through the holes on the circuit-board.
I think plastic cable ties are enough of a deterrent for would-be thieves, it's just an arse if you prefer to remove them all the time. More of an issue might be people nicking the battery, as it just unclips out, but I don't think that would be a common problem.

http://www.monkeylectric.com/products/m133s_instr1.pdf - the final page of this pdf show the wire wrap they initally used
but they now have proper metal cable ties, not jubilee clips.

thats the old light, the new one has a cable going to the hub mounted battery box…
two things: the battery cable is right next to the cable tie hole… its very easy to accidentally cut the wrong cable :-(
and the battery box has connections for two monkey electric lights!!

yeah, that was just to show the anti theft bits that they suggested to start with.

here you go, this is what they send:
2 metal ties and about a dozen plastic oneshttp://static.lfgss.com/images/londonfgss/attach/jpg.gif

Well... I've only gone and done it...
I've just spunked £60 on a set of Ledus Wheelus that I really can't justify... but they look awesome.
I'll just be waiting patiently by the letterbox then :-)

hmmm, one of mine has stopped working (solution is described on the website though), but neither of them will connect to the pc via USB which is a bit odd. I'll try rebooting it and see what happens...

gah, found a usb lead that they like, and the site has gone down :( oh well, will leave them for a little bit, and see if it comes back up soon...

If you are using MS Vista they won't update. It seems that Vista doesn't recognise them as USB drive, so you can't disconnect them.
If you are on Win 7 or (presumably) 8 you need to disconnect them as a USB drive to allow the Flash to work.
In my experience...

Right, sorted it, they seem a bit picky about usb cables, I had to try three to find one that worked.
Having grabbed the download from the site this morning, and reflashed them, both lights are working perfectly.
I have only one minor issue with them, which is that the mounting 'toe' is too short, and means that they are closer to the centre of my wheel than I'd ideally like, but that's fairly minor, although I will tweet and suggest that it's extended in the next batch.
Work colleage was suitably impressed when I rolled up and showed them to him this morning though, looking forward to taking them down to Critial Mass this month, the ability to create your own patterns is all manner of win.

Mine quit working the first time I used them, in the rain, after 3 miles, but I pretty much expected it, given that the battery and its contacts are completely exposed to the elements.
So, I got home, dried it out (works fine), then cut up some polythene off a food bag and covering it, then securing it by winding a rubber band around it. It's a bit slap-dash, but I reckon it'll do the trick, come the next downpour.

How much for enough to spray a bike?
$99 for enough to cover a hydrant, which I'm pretty sure is more surface area than most frames?

Re: getting nicked, I've had mine on 24/7 for several months, lost a back light in that time but no interest in the leedus. I think they're inconspicuous enough that people don't see them.

when I've stopped off places several people have pointed at it and asked me what it was, thinking it might be some kind of advanced anti-theft system. I think people do notice it, but it's not obvious what it is or what value it would have.

Bonus if people think it's a theft deterrent device.
My update: My water-proofing idea didn't work at all, probably made it worse as because it wasn't completely water-tight, what moisture that did get to the battery stayed-put, so the light quit working even quicker. I guess they're just not for heavy rain, which is a shame as that's one of the time you most need to be seen.
Anyone else have solutions?

Put the whole unit in a bag?
Duct tape over all but the LEDs?
Anything workable with sugru? -
• #149
I was going to suggest something similar, led's go between spokes right? Then cover both sides off wheels with Sellotape. Should stop most water getting in, probably won't be air tight so shouldn't get too humid... It's more or less what I plan to do with my polo bike... But cross winds are unpleasant...

Hi there! My two pennies' worth – ledus wheelus devices have touch-sensitive buttons onboard – Previous, Next, Pause and Off. They react on electrical capacitance change and what actually can happen there in heavy rain – drops of water can get onto 'Off' button and device switches off. If you ever dropped the water on a smartphone screen of laptop touchscreen area you know what I mean, that's perceived as a finger touch.
So, we decided to make a 'Rain mode' feature in which all touch buttons will be disabled and only clickable Power On button will work (+experimental code that will make Power On work also as Power Off, however that's a bit tricky :)) Will be added to the Ledus Wheelus software later this week and you'll be able to test it. Cannot guarantee that it will work for the swimming pool conditions, but probably will help :)
PS. Yup, that's me makin lights, thanks for all your feedbacks!
There is an upgrade to the software (ver. 0.555) now available on the website. It's to help with the problem of the 'off switch' not always working.
