I happened to be passing an Apple store so took it in for a look. I was shown how to close all open apps which were running in the background which were essentially slowing down the phone and therefore the time it took to react to the Home button. Double-tapping the home and then holding down on an app (like if you wanted to move an app on the home screen) will bring up a red X. touch the X to fully close the app.
It's amazing how many people don't know about this. Or know about it, but don't do it and complain that their phone is slow.
Just like letting the battery die fully at least once a month, and give the phone time to 'rest'. Work any machine 24/7 it's going to wear out quicker.
