The way I see this issue, I've never had to see what someone who has fallen under the wheels of an HGV looks like. And I don't really want to.
If avoiding that means denting the ego of a few people who don't like being told "you could be doing that differently/better/more safely for your own good" then my first thought is, oh well, tough. Is that selfish?
I'll guarantee you that in the saddle, just about EVERY cyclist's first response is "fuck off". Mine used to be if anyone said anything to me. I have a theory that it's because your blood is already pounding and you're all fired up. But I know that after a couple of cross words, I went away and later played the incident back over in my mind. And often CHANGED my mind after thinking about it.
Try to talk to people in the street, you should expect to get sworn at. But I don't think that means it won't do any good in the long run.
