  • Sorry, I have a timber boner, excuse me.

  • ^ You've got wood.

  • @BN - wow, that's a real skill you have there. Amazing stuff.

  • ^^ This is the last thing I made. Carved from Cherry. Around December 2009 I think.

Bloody hell, nearly 3 years ago now! That's even longer than I'd thought.

Nice! My granddad did woodcarving, painting, sketching, writing etc. would love to carry on the legacy

  • I remember a few people were curious as to how they were made, so I made a step by step walk through.

So.. Start with a photo ( my Mum's cat Barney )

3 hours in - Do a simple line drawing on the wood ( more reclaimed mahogany ) Then cut out those lines.

5 hours - Then run the router over to get an even cut depth established. I like the router, as with some care it can be used freehand. This is the the only extensive power tool use involved.

7 hours - Then a slightly curved chisel is used to slowly work back.

    9 hours - From there, it's just a case of re-drawing the shape & re-cutting over & over.

    13 hours

    14 hours

    18 hours

    23 hours

    27 hours

    32 hours

    40 hours

    46 hours

48 hours - The finished carving has 2 - 3 coats of Danish oil applied. A couple of days between coats & a light sanding between each one.

Finished with some paste wax & polished.

Total time 50 hours, but done over about 3 weeks.

  • This is the quality of work that I would hope to produce one day.

  • I give you the very talented Nick Barlow. Singer, songwriter and pretty damn handy with a chainsaw.

  • wow, BareN, that is pretty impressive, well done.

  • Nice.
I once sharpened a stick with a pen knife. That's all.

  • Scott Mcneill does some great relief carving. I love the sense of fun & his use of perspective is wonderful.

Lovely work! Looks like the kind of quality that would last a lifetime. I like the photography too.

  • About 10 years back I stumbled across the world chainsaw carving championships at some national trust property (no idea where now). It was amazing. About 40 people standing around their tree creating stuff like this. They then had a 30 minute break to have "speed carve" competition on a little stump. Incredible.

I haven't made anything serious in years, too busy crafting a PhD, which feels most uncraft like. I'd love to make another guitar sometime, though currently content myself with occasional knitting.

  • Guitar building course starts again soon \o/

Also, we're putting in a garden office at our place which will include some workshop space for me so I can actually get something done even if it's raining.

  • ^ Good to hear! Try not to fill it with bikes :-)

  • Don't forget the photos ;-)

  • There will be photos ahoy when it's ready. I've had some lovely Sapele boards marked up for cutting for MONTHS and haven't got anything done as it always seems to be raining when I have spare time.

  • Sapele looks rather lovely, though it appears to vary quite a lot. I have some nice pieces of hardwood stashed away. They've been waiting years for me to do something with them.

All I've used for the past couple of years is crappy pine that's barely had time to dry & starts to warp the moment I turn my back on it :-(

  • ^ Not all pine is crappy. Just the cheap stuff I've been building with.

  • I like Sapele a lot. It does vary but the good bits are as nice as most other mahoganies plus it's reasonably priced and sustainably farmed.
