  • For my sins I've been reading the comments on the Guardian Spurs match reports and there are fans that will never be happy with AVB, just like I was with 'Arry, but much more willing to vent even with so few matches in the books. They don't like him, they don't like the fact he replaced 'Arry, the press have the knives out, they have already written the storyline they want to see and are pursuing it.

AVB is only just starting to implement his style and management on the club, yet there is no honeymoon period, no acceptance that progress is being made. Just the lament that we finished top 4, and top 5 over the last three seasons and we should be pushing on to challenge for the title, and that our squad is strong enough to attempt it.

The inevitable slump that will happen during the season will be a difficult time for AVB, as I doubt he's going to get alot of support, but he showed on Sunday a refreshing realism, and ability to adjust. QPR bossed us first time, we didn't have any zip, or spark, had trouble passing to each other and weren't in any danger of scoring a goal. The only reason QPR weren't out of sight was the excellent goalkeeping of Friedel - take that men of the Press who are whipping up Lloris/Friedel/AVB discontent stories, when the incumbent player is being so impressive, it would be downright foolish and detrimental to team spirit to remove them for a player who hasn't proven themselves.

Yet he changed it at half time and we looked a different side second half, lucky own goal to get us back into it, and then we believed enough to break quickly, and grab a second. Couple of rocky moments towards the end of the game, but we came away with a win, after our handling of Lazio on thursday there are signs to be encouraged by. Vertonghen's ability to move to left back and still be impressive, the positional flexibility of Dempsey to push on as a second striker, Sandro and Demebele again in midfield, even though they were outmuscled in the first half..

There are reasons to be cheerful, though if you read some comments, its as if we are wedged to the bottom of the table..

On the sending off at Anfield, should have been a double yellow, they both went for the ball, both had studs showing, same sanction for both players or none at all..

Arsenal looked good in coming back from being a goal down at City, but Gervinho's got to put away some of those chances. Also hoping Giroud doesn't become the new Chamakh, got to wonder how his confidence is doing after Wenger left him on the bench.. Cazorla looks classy, and its good to see Diaby back and being imperious, and those inevitable comments calling him the new viera..
