^ I agree that the chainring is the most important part of a single ring setup.
I ran a single blackspire downhill ring with a lightweight bash guard & a cheapo dog fang for over a year with no derailments. This was on a rigid mtb off road. I don't think the bash guard was needed, I just like the clean look of them.
