  • Porlex or Porlex mini

unless you have the space/budget for a commercial grinder then I have no clue

I have the standard Porlex. I don't recommend it for espresso. They are great for all other coffee types, including Turkish.

  • I've ended up getting good results from asking Monmouth St to grind beans in the same machine at slightly diff settings for me and settled on left machine @ 2.9 which is a bit finer than the standard grind but works a treat with Gaggia Classic.

It's on the way home so don't mind buying little and often

  • Also for basic accessories Knock Simple tamper, knocktop tin and a tamping mat can be had for £31 all in

    http://www.madebyknock.com/buy.html

  • I'm up for the coffee ride, never been on a forum ride before, could throw the bike on the train sat. morning and join in.

Is October 20th confirmed? Need to clear it with family. Should I bring the road bike or fixed? Excited :)

  • does anyone have a unused grinder they want rid of, I managed to borrow an old Spong hand grinder from Vello on here.

but it is chewing up my worktop, as I grind, and I don't have appropriate wall space to attach it to. So I'm looking for something to replace it. Not sure of the difference between electric and hand grinders, like the aesthetics of a table top hand grinder, also probably the lack of noise, but don't have a preference.

so if you have a grinder that you don't mind getting rid of let me know.

as mentioned up thread, not doing anything fancy, just grinding beans for a stovetop machine.

    many thanks

  • I have a PeDe (or a PeVe) which I advertised in the classifieds awhile back. Fine enough for stovetop, but not fine enough for espresso machine pressures.

  • Krupps Electric Burr grinder for cost of postage, it's not great but might help?

  • rhb, think I'm going to go with rodabod's offer.

    thanks though.

  • On the topic of grinders.

We got the Ascaso Mini, it's not too pricey, not too big (hopper holds 250g of beans) and has diallable grind. Only down-side is that it's a little difficult to get a consistent dose.

  • no worries, the Krupps really is grinder of last resort, one notch above a rolling pin & tea towel...

  • I bought my dad a Porlex, but he keeps using his kitchen blender.

    Sad face.

  • Does anybody have a recommendation for good coffee and good breakfast near Waterloo on a saturday morning? Decent seating area and wifi essential. Thanks!

  • Although Greensmiths on the same street has coffee AND loads more food to choose from.

  • Thanks missmouse, looks fantastic. Only one problem:

    they don't actually serve food

I think I'll probably need more than just cake.

  • OOOOH the second one looks perfect. Thanks again!

  • Well what's wrong with red velvet cheesecake for breakfast? Pft.

    ;)

  • Yeah, go for a look around ScooterCaffe (you can take your own food in there if you want) then go to Greensmiths :)

  • New filter basket and tamper from HappyDonkey arrived this afternoon...I am a very happy man; the tamper is great quality for the price, so goodbye shitty plastic gaggia!

Got the same deal a couple of days ago.

    Kodos....

  • Nothing wrong with a bit of cheesecake, maybe breakfast in Greensmiths then breakfast dessert in ScooterCaffe. I'm not sure if breakfast dessert is really allowable though.

  • For the Brightonians who might follow this thread...

Red Roaster's Honduras Finca Los Vaqueritos is nice, just roasted as well.

Had too put up will a Liverpudlian sitting next to me, who wouldn't shut up, to discover that one...

Coffee Plant on Portobello road also do a good Honduran. Just a shame I can't find anyone who does any Panamanian.

The guy I get my coffee off orders from there. He orders for about 10 people so gets a big discount as the order is over £100. Normally only 1kg at a time (i get 500g via I'm special). I could split a kilo with anyone who is interested next time he is ordering? usually about £15 a kilo. Just got the house blend this time but there are a few single origins I wouldn't mind trying.

  • Just replaced the gasket on the Classic, using this demo.

Our machine had virtually stopped working, due to loss of seal between gasket and basket. I managed to get a little water on the heating elements, which caused a short, but, after drying the inside of the machine with a fan heater, normal service has been resumed.

I think we have had the machine for nearly 5 years, and I had been cleaning it fairly regularly, but never cleaned the shower plate holder and underneath. Boy, what a build-up!

  • Anyone had a syphon coffee? I saw a video recently & I'm completely in love!

    I know how you feel.

There are rather nice, functional stovetop models from 'Yama',
but did not find any retailers outside the USA that sell them for a reasonable price unfortunately...
