Curses! Bang goes my affordable build idea.
Will keep an eye out for some wheels then.
Cheers folks.

There's the odd Pompino cheap bundle on Planet-X at the mo. Worth also checking their clearance page as there's at least one pomp full build on there I think.

I have a set of 700c wheels from a geared cyclocross bike.
Which wheels? If they are Shimano 130mm (i.e. road) hubs and worth the investment, you could put a Surly Fixxer on and lose the thick NDS spacer, that will get you a 120mm spaced wheel with a thread for a single freewheel and no need to re-dish. There's one for sale here

Thanks Mr Tester. That would indeed do the job, my wheels aren't really worth the out lay of monies tho! I really like the rugged diversity of the pompino but doing my sums it might be better spent on a new ss day one cross.

Hi kids! Anybody know what the max tyre size you can squeeze into a pomp frame might be? Would love some big apples on mine for polo & the winter, anybody had any luck with these or any similar big ones?

will fit 700x32c tyres(35c slick tyres will also fit)

Yeh, thats what I thought, but there are some varied opinions here:
http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/on-one-pompino-tyre-widths.81072/Big Apples are well out the question but there is some guy running 37mm conti twisters. I had my eye on continental sport contact reflex..

could go with the 29er or 26er if you really need fatter tyres?

What mudguards are best suited to a Pompino? I use 35mm chromoplastics on my winter bike. I will be using 35mm cross tyres on a Pompino tho'
Cheers

Any ideas regarding disc-specific forks? The original forks are really heavy and I've had little joy setting-up the On-one cantis so it might be an oppportunity to move on to a disc brake. I'm thinking steel rather than carbon, something like a 26'' Kona P2 .
Suggestions welcome. -
• #913
If you want light, it's going to have to be carbon. If you want steel, the Pompetamine fork drops straight in as it has the same geometry as the Pompino fork. Most 26" forks are, bizarrely, too long due to being designed to fit frames built for suspenders. There is a 700c Disc P2, available from Kona Europe for €99.00 which is 392mm A-C, compared with 440mm for the 26" version, but it's no lighter than the £29.99 Pompetamine fork.

I wrongly assumed the P2 on 700c bikes I had seen were older, non-corrected ones. Thanks for the heads-up. Shame about the weight though, I was hoping to save a tiny bit.

I have the P2s and they are heavy. This could be an option tho. Hoping to get some for my Pompetamine eventually.

while the discussion is on forks, I'm after a recommendation for a carbon fork which I could swap and use with my current set up (i.e. mini v brakes and mudguards)?

This could be an option tho.
http://activesport.co.uk/shop/article_1350-FKSALU4K/Salsa-La-Cruz-Forks.html?pse=coaNice looking fork, but less than 100g lighter than the stock Pompetamine or Kona P2

Reminds me, i was going to use a Surly fork on my on-one when i eventually build it, any tougher forks out there that i don't know about? i'm the Surly is pretty tough, but yeah...
Don't really want a modern carbon fork

I've managed to put a set of schwalbe cx comps at 700x35 with mudguards but had to add a link to the chain and pull the rear wheel right back

Terrible pic. Again.
But happy with how it's worked out, everything's pretty dialled now.
-
• #924
Cake, any chance of you posting a few more pics? That looks exactly like what I want to build atm
-

Please don't. I'd like to build one too, but don't have the space to store it so it would be cruel.
I'd recommend dropping £50-£100 on a decent SS/fixed rear wheel (off here) and you're good to go.
