The wider the spread of the sprockets the longer the cage you need.
A road cassette is usually something like 11-23 with a 39/53, here you'd use a short cage.
A standard mtb cassette is 11-32 with a 22/32/44, here you'd us a long cage as the difference in sprocket sizes are greater.
I'm not sure exactly how to work it out but Tester knows and google will probably give you the answer
