I watched it last night as I was trying to get to sleep (HARDtalk usually does the trick). I don't think he came off well or particularly contrite, just quite bitter.
I think the programme hobbles itself by being called Hardtalk, the interviewers end up as ersatz Paxmans, confrontational and aggressive even when the subject is not being evasive. They could interview Alan Bennett and make it sound like Judgement At Nuremburg.
It also showed up the problem you have when an interviewer knows little or nothing about the person they are talking to or the world they come from. He wasn't able to go beyond questions that Hamilton has been asked dozens of times before or deal with any subtleties in what Hamilton was saying. Perhaps that serves an equally uninformed audience but more than anything I though Hamilton looked bored.
