  • 58,5. A tad too short, but the price was right and the length suited me nicely. I need to get some spotter bars for flat trans as I am always riding the hoods. And the shallow drop will be nice for sprints if I end up racing this. I need a road bike for next summer and contemplate on selling my geared cross to fund such a bike. I am not sure I will be able to keep up in cx race with gears so I won't sell until I am completely convinced that this steel BJ will do the job.

    I am. I spent the last 4 winters in new york wich serves up a rather gruesome winter just like Sweden. Thinking back on how things were I want to spend the next one on a free wheel with 25c+ tires...

  • Although ISO & BSA are officially interchangeable they are not identical (BSA is 1.37" and ISO is 1.375") - same pitch.

    No, for several reasons.

    There might be a colloquial usage of BSA for some cycle threads, but the 1.370"x24tpi BB (and sprocket) thread is correctly called BSC (British Standard Cycle) not BSA (Birmingham Small Arms)

    This exact dimension was adopted by ISO

    There is no 1.375" BB thread, although 35mm French and Swiss thread are approximately this size. Italian 36mm x 24tpi threads are the same pitch as BSC, albeit with opposite hand on the drive side, but at ~1.42" they are very obviously bigger, there's no way you'd mistake them when offering up an Italian threaded cup to a BSC BB shell or vice versa.

  • Does anyone have any experience of the Goldtec geared rear hubs?

    I bought one second-hand thinking it might be good for the Cross Check build and touring with, as their track hubs are obviously very popular and durable and have served me well. How would it compare to things like the Hope Pro III or Shimano 105/Ultrega?

    Any thoughts on the DT Swiss Alpine III vs Competition spokes? Is the extra strength of the tripple-butted A3's worth their added weight?

    Reckon this depends on what they will be used for and how much you weigh.

  • About 90-100kg + a few pannier bags. Not fully-loaded heavy touring.

    The extra weight is trivial, it's only a short section at the head end which is 2.3mm instead of 2mm

    According to DT website, (64 spokes, 264 mm):
    Alpine III 2.3/1.8/2.0 418g
    Competition 2.0/1.8/2.0 382g

    Extra expense is also trivial, 6p each at Rose

    So for an extra 36g and less than £4 for a pair of wheels, you can upgrade from Comps to Alpine III. On that basis, I can't see why anybody would use Comps.

    Definitely get proper levers, then you can angle your Cinelli 65s, or whatever those are properly and your hands wont slip off, they'll end up on the hoods where they're sposed to be.
    Practical > Aesthetic
    Anyway those tucked away 'I'm not running a front brakein-line/2 finger/BMXwhatever' levers don't fool anyone and look daft.

    It was built in '86, so has no doubt been well used, although it was in great condition when I bought it. It was white with the modern(ish) decals originally, but I much prefer these old decals, and the blue won't show up the dirt so much.

    Powdercoat was done at Armourtex, the decals are from Lloyds and I had Vaz put a clear laquer over the top so it should be pretty durable.

    All the parts are off my old Roberts that had a crack in the chainstay and seat tube and was sadly retired.

  • I've been looking to replace my purple 1950's frame for a while now, mainly due to the super relaxed seat tube which started to cause me issues with my knees in recent months.

    I always fancied a lo-pro and this popped up in classifieds (thanks to Sam Doman!). Now i'm expecting getting flamed here but i literally threw this together last night by stripping my purple bike down and re-building the lo-pro. Nothing matches, it needs bullhorns and a bit of fettling etc but I rode it into work this morning and it is an absolute blast to ride!

    The frameset deserves a lot more, so plans for the next month or so are;

    • new wheels (had the hubs and spokes sitting in the cupboard for a while now, just need to get round to buying the rims)
    • Bullhorns/TT levers
    • Possible powdercoat. I say possible as the paint is fairly tatty and could do with it but it's quite nice to not have to be precious about it getting scratched so may well leave it for a while.
