Don't worry, not everyone on here's a cunt. And you're doing much better than the guy in the post above this one, he'll probably get banned soon anyway.

Hi everyone
I'm a graphic designer who works in London. Looking to get into cycling again for getting around. Think that a single speed would be ideal.
Have been lurking so I know about UTFS, which means I hopefully won't be asking any obvious questions. (no guarantees though, sorry in advance!)

Hi all,
Just a quick intro from me - i've been around here for some time but never really considered posting, i figure i should get involved! I'm an IT Systems Admin in the City.
Recently had the idea to fix up an old Raleigh Record Ace and see if i can get a SS bike out of it to compliment my ribble roadie, so i'll no doubt put up a post and pick some brains.
Oh, i also commute from ~Imperial Wharf to the City daily, for the past 3 years (come sun, rain or snow!) so some may bump into me :)

Hi everyone,
Been lurking on the site for a little while. I've been thinking about going fixed-gear/single speed for a while.
I've been in London for a few years but only started cycling properly about 5 months ago (minus a brief few months on a completely-useless-for-roads BMX). I love it. Growing up in Wales I practically lived on my bike, it's second nature to me.
I commute every day from Kew to Tower Hill which is about 19km and I really enjoy it, it's an adventure every day. I currently have a hybrid bike - this Giant Seek which does the job very well -
The itch to replace it with a fixed gear is getting really bad though, I don't know if it's the look of them or just the idea of it. My question is, how realistic is it to cycle almost 40km a day on one? I'm pretty fit but I don't want to destroy the bike or my body in a few months.
I have my eye on this - http://2009.feltracing.com/09-catalog-unitedkingdom/track/track/09-tk3.aspx I'd even like to try my hand a track cycling too.

It takes a little getting used to and it's a bit of a grind from the off, but you'll get used to it soon enough and will love it from day 2. I didn't commute by bike at all, but then got myself a plain old fixie and do 18 miles each way each day. If you're fit enough you'll be fine. Have fun :)

What he said. Im doing 20miles a day without issues. It does take me longer though walking with a bike than without it...

hi all
im pete been riding for many years on geared bikes but got sick of killing gear systems and found that i only really used one or two gears for my riding anyway. so started to ride singal gear never tryed fixed gear. After a nasty motorcycle crash about two and a half years back my right knee is shaged and likes to jump in and out of place on its own, So using my legs as a brake is a no no. I love the style and look of fixie bikes so im going to build a bike in the fixie style but with a free wheel hub and the smallest brake leavers i can find. hope to talk with some like minded people and get some good ideas for my build. thanks pete. -

bigpete
you will need to brakes, not one on a single speed bike

Hi all,
Long time road cyclist but just built a single speed dubbed Franken-bike off old parts but only have a 42T chainset. As a fairly strong cyclist and have a 16T for my rear, what is a good chainset size to have? I was think either 46 or 48?

Alrighty,
just moved down from Glasgow and joined.
Here's my big yellow ribble. 753 track frame, undrilled with clamp on dia compes.
I'm trying to get some sort of storage rack for my bikes to put up on the wall in a narrow hallway. Does anyone know of a decent and cheap alternative to the cycloc pictured below?

hey Lfgss, many Sheffielders around? See enough cyclists on the road for there to be at least a few!

hi everyone. love the idea of bringing old bikes back to life. just got a gazelle AB off ebay so will probably trawl the classifieds for appropriate bits. I may even post a pic or two if it turns out ok.

I love this bike. It seems from the amount of seatpost you have showing it is much too big for you. Would you like to sell it?

That photo was taken just after I had built it up. The seat post is a good bit higher now although you are right, the frame is a little too big.
I have just moved down and wasn't planning on selling it. The frame had never been ridden until I got it even though it was built a while ago. Its 753 and is very light such a big frame.
What sort of money would you be talking?
hey new to the site got recommended by a friend. trying to get back it to fixed gear riding after a couple a falls and several broken bones.
