This could either be especially useful, with the advent of Apple's turn-by-turn mapping in iOS6, or just a bit shit and heavy - anyone got any experience?

Search a bit more and you'll find them for less than a tenner... Frankly I thought that was still a bit expensive and made my own from a 99p eBay case, a reflector and a chainring bolt. Worked fine for London to Brighton and lighter than most other options.
If you are worried about breaking your phone whilst crashing, pockets are no better. My first iPhone died because I fell on it after an icey skid. In fact I would have thought attached to the stem is safer?
