Well, the lovely Mrs Jingle jangle has gone out for the day with the kids, so I have an opportunity to spend some time with the Gios.
First up, bolt on new Bars & Stem:
Next up, how about a bit of calliper action?
These beautiful things have been sitting in the shed for ages, just waiting for today:
Come to daddy:
Looks like I'm on a roll.
How about some levers? Look at these boys, glinting demurely in the afternoon sunlight:
But wait, there's a problem.
Unlike all the levers I have ever fitted, these ones are secured by an old fashioned nut, not an Allen fitting. Said nut is so unaccessible it will need a special tool (or at least a socket), that I don't have.
Balls.
Time for a cuppa.

Is it a Torx head?
-
• #56
Definitely not a Torx.
It's a good old fashioned nut. Looks to be about 8mm, but very, very difficult to access.
Also fitted a new (hopefully correct) bottom bracket today. The axle is one with the threads on the end for a nut fitting (as opposed to being tapped for a bolt). Couldn't find a tool to fit over the nut but in the recess of the crank.
I could take a 'photo to illustrate what I mean, but too pissed off.
Very frustrating day. Time to start drinking!

8mm nut spinner, less than 3 quid

As above you'll need a socket to do the levers. To do the crank arms get your oldest 15mm socket and grind the outside diameter down on a bench grinder to make it fit in there. Been there done it etc!

This is like reading a history of my own SR build: BB problems, lever clamp problems, etc, etc. Why did Campagnolo make life so difficult? It all adds to the growing sense of achievement of course.

Alternative quick solution is a 15mm box spanner

Subscribe and bump.
Loving the narrative on this, the characters and drama, punctuated by cups of tea and food market visits.
Each post leaves us hanging with a "Will update this thread when things start to move" akin to a "To be continued...." dah dah darrrrrrrr
Like a good book, don't want it to end but can't wait to read the final page.
Also, hope you do a "where are they now" update later on.

I am seriously debating abandoning Campagnolo for the bottom bracket, and going for Royce.
Does anybody want to buy one of my children's kidneys?

How much?

Do I have to state a price, or can I just remain open to offers?

Lot's of fun here. Very nice bike you have there Mr. Jingles!
-
• #66
Awesome progress Mr. Jingles! But why o why are you going with the Victory brake-set? This baby deserves nothing but Super Record!

Poverty!

I love this frame

You should invest in a 3/8" ratchet set.
Always handy, for brakes fitting, mudgard, etc... I had a Stanley one for years, from Lidle, was only £8 or £10, not as good as the bacho pictured above, but solves a lot of problems for little money.
That bike will be amazing!

The problem with getting a good socket set is that you end up with a load of sockets that you are very unlikely to use.
So,get a cheap set....and buy some extra 8+10+15 sockets from Halfords Professional range (for example)
A quality socket 15mm 3/8" drive socket should fit crankbolts without a problem.
for the brakes, use a 8mm 1/4" on an extension bar.....job done.
Put a bit of blu-tack in the socket to hold the nut (and maybe another 8mm nut so that the nut you are trying to fit is flush with the end of the socket) -

I actually meant 1/4" set actually... (up to 13mm socket) for brakes, mudgards adjustment, small things like this. -

Now the proud owner of a Wickes socket set.
The 15mm socket won't fit into the gap between the crank and the nut I need to tighten. I still think Royce might be the way to go.
Btw, Vello, you still riding that Roberts?

Could be right.

I have one of these and it's excellent. Assuming it's the same one, the other side fits axle nuts too.
Amazing work, I'm very jealous!
