Polo Rules

  • We tried out the 2-second rule in Brum just now. Our "d's" are about 2.5m wide and 1.5m deep around the goal. It worked really well, and was pretty easy to self-police. With goal refs it'll be even smoother. 'Friendly' reminders from opponents can encourage you to get the hell out of there...

Definitely encouraged more open play, but there were one or two moments of weirdness where basically an attacker had to wait for a defensive player to move out of the way (un-naturally) before shooting.

  • Let's not let the thread get derailed, but this rule works well in other sports, like handball. The waiting for a defensive player to move could be a bit weird though.

  • I guess if you got used to it you'd try to avoid those situations as a defender or be able to move off towards the attacker at least.

  • Changing rules so close to a tourney? What's wrong with double-D? Honestly, what's so wrong with wanting to play a defensive game?

If you can't score against a double-D defence, then maybe you have to rework your attacking play?

I am all for rule change but this is just $%^&.

Dont even dare mod this, this rule was only brought to my attention tonight at South throw-in.

The Euros wasn't that far away and I have had players telling me they balantly abused the rule change on forearms without getting called, changes at short notice is always no-no.

Sufficient notice would be much appreciated the next time rule changes are to be made. Maybe at the end of the tourney season. 2 pence worth.

  • What's wrong with double-D?

    Nothing.

  • Haha.

  • Right, I've moved all the LO rules chat here as the last two pages have been largely that, and it's drowning out people trying to get info, and sort teams.

    Carry on as you were.

  • Good call H Bomb.

  • Had some offline chat tonight about these rules.

The main question was "Why???"... What are we gaining by adding these rules and who's driving the agenda? Are we that bored by Dan blogging "Fuck the goalie!"?

Just to qualify myself since my original post was moved to the rules thread, there wass nothing vulgar in my post, I have nothing against anyone, I know how much effort has gone into this and I appreciate every bit of it bar the rule change. This is just my opinion, not hoping that the rules will change in the next 2 days - that would contradict stance of not changing rules at short notice, something going forward if it is taken up.

  • Beagle, it's in the rules thread now

    ;-)

  • This change has nothing to do with me, but IMO it is the best tourney to try out new rules, no other tourney in the world has such a good representation of the worldwide polo community, and will be able to take their opinion of those new rules with them.

I don't even care what the rule changes are, I just think it's good there are some for this.

So I think people just need to relax, and roll with it. What's the worst that can happen? We'll have fun hitting some balls around a bit of tarmac, have a few drinks, see old friends, make new ones, and have a big party. And maybe argue about rules.

Personally, I'd have loved to see shuffles allowed. Another time, one change at a time.

  • H Bomb for Prez!

  • Dont give a hoot, should have been there in the first place and talked about no?

  • H Bomb for Benevolent Dictator!

    ftfy

  • Well yeah, but it's not your tourney, right?

  • Em, we'll talk on court, not bothered with your comments.

  • I quite like trying out new stuff but as Beagle says, some notice ould have been good. Many of us are going to turn up without ever using this rule so I wouldn't be surprised to see people forgetting about it. I'm sure I will during the weekend.

  • Fine. I'm not greatly enamoured with the changes but if I respect the organisers' decision in this non-series, non-championship tournament.

  • Que refs getting plenty of stick and the losing teams (warranted or not) b***hing aplenty thereafter, Euros dejavu?

  • srsly everyone. bring this energy to bethnal green gardens for tomorrow at 9am, you'll be much better off spending it there and you'll actually be putting efforts to good use. which will render them diametrically opposite to their current state

  • So you don't care if you have a bad time because you were caught off-guard of sudden rule changes? Get some sense and also read up on how laws are passed #justsaying

  • Good call Mark, I wish I could but sadly I can't and this the rules thread so I think talking about rules is allowed here?

  • ffs ben these aren't laws they're rules for a sport.
