Expensive from scratch, for your first bike, though.
Buy a nice complete bike from the classifieds and then worry about upgrading the parts later, I'd say. Eventually you'll have a bits box that's big enough to build 10 bikes from and you can start picking up frames as well. By that time there will be no hope for you and you'll be well down the slippery slope of bike purchases anyway.
