just looking at bars and stems, what is the benefit in oversize ones? anyone recommend any cheap ones?
Forget any claimed benefits for OS bars/stems. The reason to get them is practical. Both MTB and road use OS, therefore more choice in stems. It's now standard, so any future upgrades you do will probably be OS.
For stems go to ebay. Deda Zeros' seem to be well priced and are light as are Ritchy's.
I don't know how up-to-date the links are but this post might be helpful.
FSA bars are good value for money. It's all about personal preference, I like compact ones. There's are really good website I thought I had bookmarked which brakes down lots of bar shapes.
