Just been to a small outdoor one in london, it shouldn't need to much funding, but would be so sick!! If we got one

Maybe start by applying for lottery funding, or approach British cycling organisation? Also may be good to find out what cycling clubs are in and around Bristol and wether they can assist in application for funding?
It's a great idea :-) -

Is this irony directed towards Herne Hill or is there another one I havent heard of?

What nunuboogie said. Plus, approach some of the mayoral candidates? But it won't be easy, you'll need to look (and be) very organised and committed, preferably an established team with some big names. And it won't be cheap!

Bournemouth was 800 thou
half came from the Council, who had been campained on for years/ decades by cycle club in the area
half came from B.C
be persistant, organised and good luck -

Great advice, thankee. Btw, we should be so lucky to have a Herne Hill round here. All the best.

no funding needed then! herne hill runs all on its little self ;)

Land is the biggest problem. Find a blighted and otherwised useless piece belonging to the council.

Herne Hill is worth millions if it could be developed into housing, which it cannot. Then again, it has been a velodrome for more than a century. New land comes at a price.

A few years ago Bristol city council were given £26,000000 to turn it into a cycling city.
You'd a thought they might have done something then, but they didn't and they can't find the spare change either.Good luck with it all though. If you don't have any luck in Brizzle, there is a piece of land in Bath near the "tumps" BMX track that would be perfect.

At least you have a nice surfing lake!

Hey thanks for continued knowledge people! keep it coming, it's all valuable. Bournemouth looks ideal to me, 800 big ones doesn't sound like a lot in the grand scheme does it?

Hi all,
Heard about your campaign to get a velodrome in Bristol and I might be of some help on how to get funding...
I work for an organisation called Spacehive - a new online fundraising platform for public space projects.Anyone can upload a project to the site and then use it to raise money by "crowdfunding". It could be a good way to raise money for this as I imagine it'll be massivley popular. The whole idea is that if everyone puts in a little bit of money each you'll hit your target.
Even if you don't start fundraising for a while, you can always upload your project idea to the site (for free), and then use your project page to start promoting it and gathering support.
If you want to find out more you can email me at maddie@spacehive.com.
As a post-Bristol resident and cyclist i would LOVE to see this project on Spacehive!

If you can get support from Gavin Strange (the guy behind the BOIKMOIND video - promoting the fixed scene in Bristol), you'd be well on your way to getting a proper campaign started, I think. Find him on Twitter as @JamFactory.

I met Gav a few times through a mutual friend, and seen his design skills, he'll definitely give any campaign literature/posters a slick professional feel.

This would be amazing.
Following cliveo's suggestion, there's a map http://www.bristol.gov.uk/explore-bristol where you can check an option to see "council managed land" (is that the same as council owned?)
Anyone know of any obviously unused / derelict land? I had a quick look - few big patches by hartcliffe way and next to the a38 near parson street in south bristol but I don't know whether they're used or not.

Brizzle is fucking nightmare to cycle in. I have to commute from Temple Meads to nailsea and there's a junction I have to cross where you end up stuck in the middle of four lanes of traffic. Instead you HAVE TO hop up on the pavement and use underpass/bridge for peds to get where you need to be. The other problem is the wide, multi-lane roads which means the traffic generally is moving very fast and you freequently have to resort to ped crossings.
Anyways rant over, just need to HTFU. Velodrome idea sounds ace, not sure how I could help but I'd be willing

This sounds like a fantastic (if ambitious) idea, any more news?

Yes Jimmy_Fingers its crazy.. My thoughts are with the tandem couple mown down & killed by a boy racer on Sunday, horrific scene I understand; as for Velodrome, we're hoping the new mayor might take an interest as he's a lifelong keen cyclist. If there's anything anyone at all wants to do, even if it's simply tweeting the idea at the right heads, that'd be great! exposure is the answer.. Ride & peace

I'd say get land first (and I recently did a tour of Bristol and saw a lot of derelict land), get a cheapish outdoor velodrome built, then if it's a success see if there's an appetite to build an indoor velodrome. The latter needn't replace the former.
Should this be in the Track sub-forum?

Bristol has actually got some money through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, and I know Bristol sport are also looking at getting into cycling (I think they have the possibility of funding from british cycling).
Not sure how much money is available, and anything proposed has to be implemented by April 2015 (department of transport are strange with their grants that way), but possibly could make a start.

Hello folks.
Do any of you have a clue about where to begin re. funding, construction etc? It's a long shot but worth a go.
Cheers!
