The SRF 5 is the wide range 5 speed. They do narrower ones. It will be as simple and reliable as the 3 speed. As it sounds like her only bike, it seems sensible to have the extra range. But thats a matter of taste.

Deraileurs are a solid option. If you dont mind cleaning out grime, and keeping on top of the indexing.

The nice range of the last 5 speed option has me thinking of one for Mrs Smallfurry. I seem to have killed her BSO, by using it as a bike.

You changed my mind on the 5 speed a bit there, ill look into 5 speeds that are not wide range, but still i'm sure the 3 speed has all the range of gears she needs to get up n down the local hills

Shes riding a old 6 speed Peugeot now, the chain has fallen off a few times, got jammed up between the spokes, stuff like that, not good.
