Pump is ACE! Cool as shit.
Jog on you gloomy fucks!
Something that nice will miraculously disappear. More so in Hackney.

• #4554
Is this a sweepstake?
I'll take 2 weeks.
-
• #4555
Why would it? What is someone going to do with it? Sell it?! It's far more likely than it'll get vandalised, if anything.

Sorry, I was going for broken/stripped.
Shiny metal thing that moves.
-
• #4557
That much metal has enough scrap value to attract thieves.
-
• #4558
really? why aren't railings constantly torn out at traffic lights in town centres? Even if the scrap was high enough (aluminium is roughly £750 a tonne, they cant weigh more than 60kgs, so roughly £50 of value if they are made of aluminium, and you can get a dodgy scrap dealer to take a bike pump they have to take apart before smelting) then I think tearing them out the ground might cause a little commotion in London. Scrap thieves will surely continue going to copper cabling.
I think some will work, some will get broken, some will never be active, but that one day I get a slow puncture and see one on the way home I will be very grateful.
Edit: though actually that hose looks like it could easily be unscrewed.

They should put 3 in a row, like a cycle pumping station ! :)

Right, enough about the pump, its derailing the shit out of this thread. Spotter, come post good stuff quick.

I could cycle that lane all day long and not get bored.
-
• #4566
Reminds me of a lane close to Westonbirt Arboretum, went through there on our way down the Thames Path years ago.
^ Wrong; different trip, but we were there. -

The pumps are good, aren't they?
There are two more in LB Hackney, see if you can find them.
That's not going to stay there for very long...
Indeed, after the first installation it had to be taken back by the company that installed it for some fine-tuning. (A forumenger works for said company, so he may have been involved in that.)
They're slowly popping up around London.
Most of them don't work.
I suspect they'll be limited to Lambeth and Hackney at first.
Let's see how quickly the rest of London catches on.
We fully intend ours to work.
Why would it? What is someone going to do with it? Sell it?! It's far more likely than it'll get vandalised, if anything.
Experience from the Netherlands suggests that people do leave them alone, but as this is London, my friend, perhaps only time will tell.

The pumps are good, aren't they?
What problem do they solve?
I mean, how often do you really get punctures, and have a puncture repair kit or spare tube, and tyre levers but not a pump? And also be far enough away from a bike shop not to be able to use their pump. How often do you really get punctures anyway?
I would much rather the money was spent on any number of other things that would be of use to cyclists. More bike racks, for example.
-
• #4570
I don't think it's specifically for punctures but more if you're out and about and notice that your tyres could do with some air? As a fairly absent-minded person I usually don't notice that my tyres are a bit flat until I'm halfway to my destination.
-
• #4571
You seem to be underestimating the amount of people with bikes but without a pump of any kind. Whenever I see my sister I have to point out how the tyres have no air in them and pump them up.
-
• #4572
What problem do they solve?
The problem of underinflated tyres.
-
• #4573
But do these people with bikes who don't have pumps actually ride their bikes? Because if they don't, then these pumps will be no use to them. I doubt that just seeing a pump out on the street would motivate them to start cycling. A pump costs a tenner - not having a pump won't stop people cycling. Or are there loads of people who are cycling regularly but whose tires are flat? If they're just intended for absent-minded people then I'd still rather see the money spent on more bike racks.
-
• #4574
yes there are, people like my sister who cycles to work every day to save money, but don't know anything past that her bike is white and has a brown seat and handlebars.
-
• #4575
What problem do they solve?
Not sure if trolling, but in addition to the above--it's just a better level of service for cycling. The bike shops will be glad to have fewer people popping in asking to use a pump, it's always important to tell people to pump up their tyres (and look after their chain--very common reasons why people enjoy cycling less), and it sends a visible signal that cycling is welcome and expected.
It was also found that it helps people appreciate the value of a track pump--every household should have one, but many people are unaware that they exist and have never used one.
I would much rather the money was spent on any number of other things that would be of use to cyclists. More bike racks, for example.
The budget the local authority has for on-street cycle parking far outstrips the cost of these pumps.
