No offence Corny but comparing football threads to pro racing threads isn't a sensible comparison.

Currently there is a 2012 Pro-Cycling thread, there was a Tour de France 2012 thread, there is an Olympic Road Race thread, I'm sure in due course there will be a Vuelta 2012 thread, if there isn't already. But no one feels the need to merge them into one almighty Pro Cycling thread.
Shock horror, multiple threads about multiple races on a cycling forum in a sub forum called Rides & Races.

Go here and try starting a thread about lots of different cyclings events. I would wager they'd be merged or deleted in minutes.

The constant posting of football threads is pissing me off. It's a fucking cycling forum.

object, if football threads are in miscellaneous and meaningless, then there should be no need for complaint.

The forum stopped being JUST about cycling, a few months after it fucking started, and I've got no problem with their being multiple threads on different races, just as I have no problem with their being specific threads for specific football tournaments. It hurts no one and means that specific views can be aired in the appropriate context.

I've got no problems with people not wanting to read, or talk about football, I DO have a problem when not wanting to read or talk about football means that those that do, have to be sectioned off in one little thread, and any thread that is created outside of that is forced back into it, to that threads detriment, creating nothing but confusion and resentment...

I personally do not merge unless asked to in this thread or unless it's screamingly obvious.

I prefer being asked, and I prefer to not do it immediately... because there is no un-merge functionality. So it's nigh on impossible to rectify a bad merge.

As for Football and this particular merge. I agreed, when Euro 2012 was proposed to be merged, that national competitions have a very different audience from league/club football and that there was no reason to merge.

So I agree... Olympic Soccer shouldn't have been merged.

I can't undo it though... so just start a new thread and hippy will not touch it (I think his post constitutes a promise to not do so).

All that said, hippy is right on one thing... it's a cycling forum.

Corny, your rant about there being many pro-cycling threads is a bit misplaced. I would be very surprised to find on a major football forum lots of threads for pro-cycling events just because they have lots of threads on football tourneys. It just doesn't work on a cycling site to say "But you do this for cycling so why can't we do it for X" (where X is something totally unrelated and of appeal to the minority cyclists). That's just broken logic.

Yeah, there's a balance to be struck. A minority love football, and a minority hate it. The majority is non-plussed and doesn't know why it's on a cycling forum but largely don't care. I'm in the majority, I'm OK so long as the bickering isn't causing me work and I'm not getting PMs to merge this into that or to micro-manage some petty squabble.

I think the balance is for it not branch out like a delta into hundreds of threads, but I see nothing at all wrong with threads for major international tournaments.

If I had such an issue I'd start merging Olympics stuff a different direction... Olympic cycling vs Olympic dumping ground. (hippy, don't do this).

Anyhow, yeah... start another thread, my apologies for the merge occurring as I didn't go out of my way to communicate to hippy the non-merging of the Euro 2012 thread which set precedent. And we'll promise not to merge international football tourneys again.

Corny, you're missing my point, stating that there are multiple cycle racing threads in a subforum specifically for organising rides and/or discussing racing is a bit like pointing out there are multiple tournament threads in the Bike Polo forum. Those forums were specifically created for precisely what they are being used for. I can understand your annoyance, just not the way you're trying to complain about it.

It's easy to unmerge that - just move the posts into a new thread. As I said in the PM it's VB's call but I think it's bullshit to have multiple threads for one sport unless they're cycling.
