I know I need a new crank but what should I be buying /looking for?measuring?
What does my friend need to know before fixing?
I see. I didn't read your other post properly.
He'll need:
a crank extracting tool,
pedal spanner and thats it.
Looks like a square taper chainset so get another one of those (you'll know for sure when you remove the old one)
Measure your crank arm length from centre of BB axle to center of pedal hole - it'll probably be 170. You can go longer or shorter tbh with little difference.
Count the teeth. Match it up to your new chainset to get that sweet gearing you love so much. Or get a different gearing and be tougher/wimpier depending.
Thats pretty much it.
Any chainset will work tbh. Just get as close to that as you can. Try not to stress too much about chainline and the like. A standard single ring chainset will give a roughly similar chianline.
