i read somewhere they don't like it when left on seat post with no mudguards, but then i bet most lights (unmodded) will struggle.
i think the flares are a good option for second light on the bag. flexi enough to not have to take it off at all.
retroflective stickers (mind there are plenty colours even black ones that are invisible on black rims etc. during day) are THE way for side visibility. dead on 90deg on bike visibility is next to 0.
