Coins bearing the image of deceased monarchs are not out of date, they are just old. Until the madness of decimalisation, it was still fairly common to find Queen Vic pennies in your change. I still have a 1910 Edward VII penny which was legal tender until 1971, and shillings and florins stayed in circulation as equivalents of the new 5p and 10p coins until the early 90s.
