I suppose it could be as simple, and tragic, as someone having dropped the tail-gate and the driver not having seen it, Ashe is quite correct when he says it would have been difficult to see side on.
But, would you go that close to a lorry?
My natural reaction would be to give obstacles a wide berth just in case.
