  • By the way pneumatic bicycle tyres must be one of the mosty stupid things ever invented in my opinion! Solid tyres may not have been perfect but they were a damn sight better than trying to fix a puncture in the pouring rain or having to push a bike home ten miles! And now that there are polyurathane foam tyres why the hell are manufacturers still churning out these damn stupid penumatic tyres? If I owned a bike shop I would fit all my bikes with polyurathane foam tyres as standard.

    You're absolutely right!
It's everyone else who is wrong.

  • Goldsword, there is no reason to be getting very many punctures. You will be able to stop getting so many by changing your tires or pumping them up more. I know I will inevitably get one now I've said this, but since I changed to 28c vittoria randonneurs I've done 1000 miles that my cycle computer has recorded and probably about the same again before I got the computer. I've had zero punctures with these tyres - and I weigh 12 stone and am often carrying a lot of stuff around too (laptop, books, two big locks etc). These aren't even the most puncture resistant tyres around, I got them just cos they were very cheap, schwalbe marathon plus are even more resistant from what I've heard. Even if I puncture immediately after having said this, how on earth is a puncture every 2000 miles that big a deal?

    really?! REALLY!?

I have never seen a statement more worthy of complete LFGSS, fire and brimstone, utter annihilation.

In future think much, much, much harder before writing anything. Also never buy a bike shop, or a bike for that matter. Don't become an engineer, inventor or anything that involves thinking to be honest.

    Also Nerged.

  • What's wrong with foam tyres? I don't have them but they look interesting...

  • Sheldon quite concisely says:

    ** Airless Tires **

Of all the inventions that came out of the bicycle industry, probably none is as important and useful as Dr. [Dunlop](http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_dr-z.html#dunlop)'s [pneumatic](http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_p.html#pneumatic) [tire](http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ta-o.html#tire).
Airless tires have been obsolete for over a century, but crackpot "inventors" keep trying to bring them back. They are heavy, slow and give a harsh ride. They are also likely to cause wheel damage, due to their poor cushioning ability. A [pneumatic](http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_p.html#pneumatic) tire uses all of the air in the whole tube as a shock absorber, while foam-type "airless" tires/tubes only use the air in the immediate area of impact.
Pneumatic tires require pumping up from time to time, and can go flat, but their advantages overwhelm these difficulties.
Airless tire schemes have also been used by con artists to gull unsuspecting investors. My advice is to avoid this long-obsolete system.

  • Sarcasm detector off? Or am I being really generous?

  • Ok I wasn't going to post this, but if there's a lynching and my comments prob won't get noticed:

Solid tyres replace the need to occationally fix a puncture with the need to regularly true your wheel and much as some punctures are not repairable sometimes you'll need to replace the rim... Which would you rather do in the rain? Which costs more? Which is it easier to carry spares of?

Unless of course you've tried a solid tyre you'd like to recommend?

I didn't get that tone also the newbie factor always makes me suspicious. Its also best to crush any new ideas as quickly as possible. LFGSS does not embrace change.

  • The fear of change, short change and any interchanges. They really put the shits in me.

When did he say that? Have there been any recent advances in the tech involved?

When I was a kid I had a solid rubber rear tyre on my mtb... Now that really was ridiculous!

  • I tested a pair of airless tyres on my old Downhill Rig, I'll confidently say that even though I was on a route I knew and was confident with, using airless tyres made that route ridiculous. It changed the feel of the bike, the suspension settings had to be changed to compete with the firmness of the tyres.

I did 2 runs, got to the car and changed back to Tubes and proper tyres. Airless/solids for the road. Nah, not for me. If I get a puncture I'll change tubes and repair the puncture when I get home. Some systems work for a very good reason, because of their simplicity. Personal opinion, just saying.

  • My new fear;
cyclists with airless tyres, that got chronic back pains and have fuck all traction on whatever surface, have a laugh at me should I be seen patching tubes at the side of the road...

  • I am living in bournemouth and am from hertford, neither have overly busy and/or furious roads. I dont really feel afraid of anything when cycling on the road. I tend to get scared when I stop cycling, what I am afraid of is that I might be overly un scared, in the same way that I am not scared of wasps or bees as I have never been stung, though I am afraid one day this might lead me to be careless and get stung... so to speak :)

  • I'm afraid of my freewheel. I'm not really sure why. Whenever I coast I do it all tentative-like, as though I'm expecting the cranks to become agitated and gnaw my feet off at the ankles. I also have to tell myself "ok I am going to coast now. Ready? Oh god I'm not ready. Ok, just chill. Ready. Coast. 3-2-1 oh god I can't do it. Just get on with it, what's the worst that can happen. 3-2-1 ok ok ok i'm coasting don't panic oh this is actually fine and comfortable and nothing bad has happened at all"

  • Huge posters reminding me of what I am afraid of while cycling.

That's no way to talk about the people of LFGSS.
