So that's the official police line these days then?
I wonder what level of crime that covers?
-
• #1905
None. It covers none crime.

If you say you have a civil claim against them you can get details, as I understand it.

It's easy to find out whether or not a vehicle is taxed and / or insured if you have the reg.
It's very difficult to find out the registered owner's (who may not be the driver) address from these details. You need to have a valid reason why you want their address, for example they've parked in front of your garage blocking it and you believe the vehicle has been abandoned - you'd also have to provide photographic evidence.
-
• #1914
Is 'they tried to run me over' not a valid reason? If that fails try 'the police aren't doing their job so I'm doing it for them'.

I rode up to some police later on the way in and asked what would happen if I reported it. They said most likely they wouldn't prosecute because of cuts.
Fucking bullshit.

I've done this. I wrote to the DVLA and said the vehicle was blocking my driver, I think I paid £4 and they sent me the registered keeper's details.

I nearly got ran over... again on Monday evening on my way from New Cross to Camberwell... again. This time it was before the set of traffic lights just after Peckham space. I was on the cycle lane, there was a bus to my right, when the green light came on, we both started moving and all of a sudden, a car from the far right lane overtook the bus and myself to have turned left, luckily, I hadn't clipped my SPDs to the pedal so I managed put my foot down just in time. Oh did I mention he was going at speed too? I didn't see that car as he wasn't supposed to take a left turn on the right lane, and judging from the bus driver's shocking face, I am pretty sure he didn't see him too. I am fine but somehow in a way I wish he'd knock me down so I could take further actions. But then he was so close from knocking me off and yet didn't bother slowing down or stop, so if I did get hit, it'd most likely be a hit and run...
Will the police really not do anything if there isn't any physical contact? Because last time I checked, this is what they told me.

Don't ever wish for that... just don't.
It's enough that you're fine and were still able to type your post here....

I know, it's been a hell of a week so far for me, so a bit of depressive talk there... being alive and well is the single most important thing... :-)

In my experience they won't do anything even if there is physical contact. I've had two experiences in the last year: was forced off the road by a bus, and hit from behind by a van at a traffic light. They didn't do anything in either case. With the van I had a picture on my phone. Still nothing. It's a bloody scandal, really it is. And the fatalities keep racking up and nothing is done.

My experience has been a little more positive then - a couple of years ago a driver who gave me a bump from behind because apparently I was going too slow was fined £450 and 6 points off his license. And when I was hit a few weeks ago, I reported it and have already gotten a letter from the police saying they are dealing with it and will inform me with the outcome in due course.

I got a letter from the police in both cases, but no action. Did you just fill in that form they give you at the cop shop? That's what I've done. But I put all the detail in, and mentioned that I had a photo, did a diagram, the whole shebang.

Sparky, maybe you could email Caroline Pidgeon at the London Assembly about your experiences. There is a meeting tomorrow for cyclists to give their views on how to make cycling safer and more appealing.. http://www.london.gov.uk/who-runs-london/the-london-assembly/assembly_investigation/cycling-london I can't go but I sent her a very long list.
Had a scary experience with silver Renault Laguna T472 MOE this morning. I overtake on the inside, in the gutter, as traffic slow then move into the lane. Driver goes completely bananas at this innocuous move. Drives his car at me twice, shouting and screaming, then overtakes with a sideswipe, then tries to sideswipe other cyclists still shouting and screaming. Scary guy.
Cheers for the support to the guy on the mountainbike. If you see this get in touch. tfreke at hotmail com or pm me.
