Quick, need to make evidence here before I strip it down for clean ups and repairs and replacements.

I'll take a pic of it leaning nonchalantly on a gate post in the morning, on the commute, with the carradice fitted.

I got knocked of my bike last week and my Steamroller's front wheel was destroyed - has anyone got a spare one in silver?
-
• #1080
I've got a bright red one with black hubs and spokes you can borrow for a week or so.

Get some proper mudguard and p-clip instead, the roadracer were designed for road racing bicycle, whether the Surly aren't.
Why they never have mudguard mount in the first place is odd, probably trying to seperated it from the Crosscheck.
Spot on, Ed.
I think it is to create a minimal 'trackish' look, just as there is only one set of water bottle bosses, mudguard eyelets are seen by Surly as surplus to requirements.
I really think they should include eyelets, especially as this bike gets ridden outdoors more often than indoors.
You will seen my 'Roller, all P-clipped up, higher up the thread. I ride in the UK, where it rains.

ed I saw a post on here somewhere in which you mention a place in deptford that will braze on eyelets. any idea what it was called?
I wanna stick a front rack on my roller but don't think p-clips will be enough if I ever wanna load it up properly.
@HatBeard ... I just bought a steamroller off ebay that has a Gamoh King rack, and adapters like the ones edscoble has posted - only they work OK without QR.
I don't need it, so am looking to sell it and can chuck in the adapters. It's in good nick - no scratches and the wood hasn't suffered - still has the logo looking good. Can post a photo if you're interested?
TFG are quoting £88 so howabout £44 if you're interested?
Otherwise, been enjoying my steamroller - had it about a month so far - replaced its riser bars with drops and hoping it can be a countryside cruiser as well as a commuter.

cheers for offer, not in position to buy anything at moment but reckon someone will snap it up on classifieds if you post it there.

Hey gang. Considering a purchase. Being offered the following -
Asking price is £300, which sounds pretty good. I really haven't got the space for it, but too good to pass up?

Just stuck big bars on my Steamroller. Rides like a dream.
On the other hand though, I'm looking at making some upgrades to my poloroller. At the moment I'm running a dual lever to calipers (Tektro Rsomething up front, System ex front caliper at the back (pre '07 'roller)). While they work "okay" in the dry, the stopping power isn't incredible and in the wet it's pretty much non-existent and braking in general is pretty hard work.
I've come up with 4 options, if anyone has any other options, or advice I'd really appreciate it...
- Upgrade pads (go for salmon koolstops or something) and possibly cables - cheap but not sure if it'd be enough of an improvement
- Go front disc only - excellent stopping wet or dry, would require new fork, I'm stuggling to find something with similar axle-to-crown, most are longer, making the geo slacker. Options so far: LHT disc fork, possibly Genesis Croix de Fer fork, cotic roadrat fork (except disc tab is on the wrong bloody side!). Would also need a new wheel, strong enough for polo.
- V brake booster plate things - not as pricey, don't need new wheels and supposedly v brakes have more power than calipers. Downside - not sure if plate would fit to current surly forks, not sure if rear would fit as seat stay was bent a "bit" when hit by car
- Welding mounts - not sure if I can be bothered, might as well get a new frame.
- Upgrade pads (go for salmon koolstops or something) and possibly cables - cheap but not sure if it'd be enough of an improvement

i'd be all over that for 300 notes. I'd also be all over removing the stickers from the rims

looks like a freewheel on the back? if so, i'd be all over a back brake

Just done some detective work and figured out the seller bought the bike on ebay for £255 (plus £20 shipping). Bargaining chip!
-
• #1093
even so, it's a reasonable deal for a nearly new Surly frame in top nick.
-
• #1094
I assume it's in good nick, but the photos he's posted are the ones off the ebay sale, which is how I found the ebay listing. Still, sale was in May, so how much damage could he have done in that time?!
Waiting to hear back. Unfortunately this is going through a friend as it's advertised on a forum I can't access (waiting for registration).

Looks like a bargain, if the frame is big enough for you?
-
• #1096
I'd go for it. Would give you a very good starting point for improvements, should you have plans on doing that.

Thats what I paid for mine which hasn't got a mark on it. But no brooks on mine and alex wheels. I think thats a good deal if its unscratched etc. you'll love the zingspring of the frame IYKWIM.

I know this is adding to the general pain around mudguards but wondered if anyone had tried SKS chromos with 32c tyres (the ones batched with the current Steamroller)... I bought some - couldn't decide which size was right so went for the 'wide' option (35 - 38) and now am in the middle of guard-fitting hell. I've seen loads of guards fitted to what look pretty much like 30s or 32s here and on google images, with the metal bridge in place and no obvious other mods... but can't see how anyone achieved this.
The front one's fine - I just cut the stays down and filed the hole on the bracket out a bit and all is ok - but the rear is a nightmare... couldn't get the metal bridge thing to work even after filing the hole down so punched a couple of holes in the guard in order to zip tie it on via the brake mounting. Which seems to work only I now need smaller P clips for the rear stays - but I wondered if anyone else had used zip ties - do you think it's a good enough method? Or should I move on to attacking it even more and cutting it in two, fashioning brackets either side, etc (sounds like a total faff). Just that the underside of the tie inside the guard still seems very close to the tyre.

^^^ Seller appears to have rejected my low ball bid and pulled it from the forum it was advertised on :/

I'm not sure I understand what's wrong, I don't see why zip ties wouldn't work though. They held mine on at the stays when I bust the pclips just fine. Don't see why it wouldn't work for the brake bridge.
Are you running a rear brake? I'm not, so I just used a thinner bolt and some washers to hold the guard in place there.
I love the one with the off white tyres. Might almost belong in functional?
Bang your Carradice on there!
