  • Really enjoying your approach to this build, and the thread. Very clear you're savouring it all.

Shame about the BB. I need a 118mm to clear my Merckx - they're often narrower than claimed anyway.

Not convinced by the saddle, although that may change with bar-tape and all the rest of it fitted.

  • Theres a LBS where I live and the chap LOVES campag parts from your designated time period, he has a multitude of bottom brackets too, if you want, I can pop down there some time in the week and take note of what he has for sale?

  • ^ very kind of you sir, would appreciate that.

Looks like my progress will be thwarted till this issue is resolved. Also now seriously considering investing in some leather-clad bars.

  • The first chip on that paint is going to hurt..
    Beautiful bike.

  • Gave it a little nick when pissing about with the cranks. Tiny chip. Had to sit down for a while and re-centre myself.

  • I did exactly the same on my last build, brand new paint and everything.
It's a good spot for your first chip though (chain stay right?) not too visible...
    Good luck with the build.

  • i got a 118mm stronglite sealed bb from dereks cycles for me alan record carbino build up

  • Having recently enlisted the services of both Mr Vaidas and Harry Rowland in getting a beautiful 80s steel frame bike back into action quite recently, I'm loving all this. Not to mention the fact that said bike has been resprayed in a Ferrari Red/Gios Blue paint scheme.

...having said bike sitting in front of me, I'm also going to suggest that if this was my build I think I'd go for the classic black saddle/white bar tape combo.

    Keep going, this is great.

  • Stem arrived from Wiggle yesterday -very prompt service.

Bit bombed out with work at the moment, so unlikely to get much more done this weekend or next. No great need to rush this one anyway.

  • I would have put a full Super Record gruppo from 1975 on this frame but still you are going on with a great project!

That frame is lovely. I hope to get the original one day :)

  • possibly the best project thread ever.

  • Hello sir! I'm that forum member who bought your Roberts blue frame, about a year ago, I ride it as often as I can, and enjoy it a lot by the way... It was very nice to meet you then. This thread is a pleasure, thanks for sharing! Amazing project!
    Loic

  • flying to italy to pick up a frame?

    Hardcore. :D

  • Hi,

Just checked in to start a thread about my latest project, and see people have been commenting on this build.

Since my last post, I have acquired the correct length axle, so can get this build back on the road when time permits.

Loic, was a pleasure to meet you. I regret selling that Roberts frame, but I know it is in good hands, so continue to enjoy it.

Will update this thread when things start to move.

  • Had a rubbish day yesterday.

Came home after 12 hours on the Motorway to find a package sitting on the mat.

    Inside were these:

    Them's Gios Bar End Plugs!

Kindly gifted to this project by the very lovely 1 + n.

    Thank you kind sir.

  • Quick update:

This project has stalled badly, due to a combination of; incessant rain, poverty, the Olympic Games, the demands of parenthood, work and apathy.

I've got more-or-less all the parts I need to finish it, but a bit short of time at the moment.

On Saturday. I placed an order with Wiggle. As with my previous experiences with this company, everything worked seamlessly, and this evening on my doormat was this box:

    Inside said box were these:

    That's a Cinelli 1a Stem and a set of Giro D'Italia Bars.

All I need now as a bit of free time, and we'll be on the road.

  • Thread delivers on all fronts. Very excited for you to get it all together and rolling :)

  • Get Vaidas to put it all together for you. You'll get tea and biccies whilst they're finishing off the bar tape.

  • Looking good. How do you reckon the transition from the bars to the brake levers is gonna be?

Was looking at the same bars, but still undecided as I'm not sure whether they're comfortable when riding on the hoods.

I'm sure it will be fine.

The 1a stem / Giro bar set up is fairly standard. I'm sure I must run it on a few other bikes.

  • They're not ergo's or compacts with a smooth and straight/horizontal transition, but still very good because essentially they were the compact models of their time with the least drop and most "boxxy" profile. google is your friend, it is fine.

  • can't believe I've only just spotted this thread - great read. Very jealous.

  • btw - surely the list should include an Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra! :)
