I have 48 x 18 on my other bike, which I believe, if Sheldon is correct, is 70.1 GI. Which is just way too spinny for 20 miles, well it was for me anyway. I didn't feel comfortable. 48 x 16 is starting to hurt my knees a little bit with that mileage, hence 48 x 17. Like I say, will see how it goes first. I do know you're right by the way - I am just being stubborn.
I usually ride 48/14 but will be riding 48/17 for this as well. Should be fine. I rode Swansea-Bristol-London last summer which was 100 miles followed by 130 miles across two days. I rode with 44/15 on a crappy beater and that was bearable. But now I'm a lot stronger and don't have a (completely) shit bike. The slightly smaller gear should help too!
