  • tb14s?

  • Archetypes!

  • oof

  • Quality as to be expected of you Ben.. I know and will fight for my place in the dibs queue.. ;)

  • A 30+mile round trip and managed to get enough Double butted DT's to lace a Wheel.

So, when in the height of british summer, sit indoors with a log fire, rum and a spoke key. Perfect wheel building weather,

The Archetypes build a nice light wheel, I can't wait to get on them and try out the ride of the wider rim.
Only tiny gripe is the logo doesn't appear to be easily removed (glad i decided against the black in that respect) and the logo isn't centred on the rim.
If I wasn't using a brake I think (logo issue aside) the black rim might've been a better match for the hub. A silver hub, say Royce would be better for the next set :)

  • Logo ties in with the black hub mate, I like them. Got any pictures of them on the bike..?

  • Hey J! Don't get me wrong, I think they look good! and yes, you're quite right, they tie in with the logo nicely, so not too worried about removing it.
It built really well/easily, I'm very pleased, should look great on the Burls. Which sadly is at work, so no pics yet. Next week should have a few updates :)

  • Love this build, looking forward to seeing the wheels on the bike!

  • This turned up after a long trip from Italy, could be a perfect match (or too match-ey) for the wheels.

  • not my cup of tea that saddle, but it's pretty bling bling and will as you say look great with those wheels

  • Apart from the skewed sticker, how's the quality of the rim? How did they build up and how do you think the anodising will suffer from braking? I'm thinking of a set of these for a future build but haven't seen them in the flesh. Wanted some HED Ardennes rims (for the width) but they won't sell them separately. These Archetypes seem to tick all my boxes.

    Nice build btw.

  • I'm glad I waited for these. The quality of the rim is great, same as tb14 (which was my other choice) I'm not sure on the brake wear yet, but assumed the hard ano'd finish will be better than the sliver or black. Perhaps someone who has run a tb14 could offer up some experience, guess they are the same standard of finish.

I've not built many wheels, but this was the easiest yet. Though realised some kind of nipple tool/driver/wrench would've made it a bit quicker. But yeah, once laced, it was pretty straight forward getting it tensioned and trued.
Scales make it 968g built (without tyre/tube/cog)
Really looking forward to getting the front built so i can get them rolling.
The main appeal was strength (h+ seem pretty bombproof) and the wider rim and they certainly offer that, plus they look good.

So far, I can't really fault it. I'll post up some pics on bike when they're done, or could arrange to check them out if you're interested?
They're in at TFG and would assume BLB to get a look.

  • that looks great, i have one of those very rims to build sometime next week. If you don't mind, what did you make the erd out to be?

  • ...Wanted some HED Ardennes rims (for the width) but they won't sell them separately. ...

    http://www.wheelbuilder.com/hed-road-rims/ will ship:

    ....
Shipping to W11 2BQ is about $87 USD for two Belgium rims.

  • Such hot rims mate, am sure they'll go amazing with the bike. The low flange hubs go great with them aswell. Are you running ceramic bearings with them? I'm getting quoted 220€ more for them. Reckon they're worth it? Love the build, keep the photos coming :)!

Ah, now, I was a bit silly there! I don't have the exact (average) ERD to hand. I went to a nearby shop, as I wanted new spokes and the benefit of a proper chart and some pro advice. I used the sapim calculator at the shop and forgot to write it down with the hub info. I want them, so will get them next week. If you're in no rush can send you the details when I have them. He's ordered me the remaining spokes and will check the spoke tension, so i'll get them then, at the very latest.

Woah, 220 extra?! I would say mine are standard steel (picked them up second hand) and I am 100% happy with them. The spin beautifully. I don't doubt ceramic would be smoother and shave milli-sec's off your PB, but only you can decide if it's worth it. Personally, it wouldn't be a wise investment for me, unless I had a spare 200 sods.

  • Yeah think I'm with you as they'd make no difference to me performance wise and I can get a new sug75 crankset for that. How you finding the new rims then?

  • Makes sense, especially when its a choice between a new set of black 75's, or not.
I'm sure you can buy the ceramic bearings for considerably less and upgrade later, if needed. No doubt the steel will serve you proud.

Rather frustratingly, the wheel is still un-ridden. My Burls is at work, so we will be re-united next week. Might see if I can wait until the front is built before riding them....probably not though.
Shall update with pics and info as soon as.

  • pics of saddle on bike pls?

  • you son of a gun B.! stole my idea about the rims! =)) great minds etc

btw, last time we spoke you wanted to keep the araya ones? what happened?

  • oh sorry, mixed your two builds))))

  • btw, last time we spoke you wanted to keep the araya ones? what happened?

Decided to give them one last shot! I'm going to split the rear hub and re-build onto a 120 fixed rear (saving at least one rim) I only have this frame for running fixed now, and not convinced they suit without a overall, but that might happen. Either way they'll be easier to sell on with a 120 rear.

What build have you got in mind for the archetypes?

  • had
    bridgestone
but dont let me steal your thread man! =))

  • Looking lovely Ben!

Enjoying the Ti on Ti setup with the stem... been sorting out the feather stem on the Max today, but still not looking as slick as that!

Was dead set on some TB-14s for the Max build, but seeing the Archetypes has made this decision a little more difficult... they are similar-ish to the Omega Vs I have on the other bike though! decisions decisions

  • Cheers Harry, but you can't really go far wrong with Moots, it's beautifully made gear. The Feather is a lovely thing as well, I hope it works out on the Max. A CP Thread soon eh?

Yep, same as. I like the look of the Tb14's very much, and they seem to have very good feedback, so they were always in my mind. Thought the slighter deeper/semi-aero look would suit the Burls better though, so decided to try these out and will save the tb14s for something more suited to a box rim.
They are very similar to your Omega V/Wolber tx profile/cxp12, etc. but with a more definined brake surface, but nicer than a cxp33. The reason I didn't choose one of those, is the archetype is the wider rim, offering a bigger tyre option, and nicer shape to the 23c from what I can gather.
For me though Harry, the only decision is which one first ;)
