i guess it depends on how often you think you'll be riding fixed. does your frame have horizontal dropouts?
you'll have to remove derailleurs and cables etc each time you want to change over, so it sounds like a bit of a pain to me.

Yep my frame has horizontal drop outs (like the old road ones) so can easily be converted to fixed.

It does sounds like a pain in the ass.
