Presently watching Ben Hur on Film4. I am swooning (on my day off) at the quality of a film made using what was essentially a medium format size film stock*****. Absolutely amazing. The detail is so rich, and quality of the lighting cameramen so magnificent, one can't help to be in awe of the technical aspects of the film.
*****Film stock was 65mm size, instead of the standard 35mm size that had already become the industry standard. Medium format film in photography is essentially 60mm x 60mm(square), 60mm x 45mm, 60mm x 70mm, 60mm x 90mm.
Imagine it, a movie camera made to use a medium format size film. Oh yes, there were 70mm films made too (same family).
Those were the days.
