I switched to clipless today. Shimano PD M780 SPDs and Bontranger Soltice shoes (entry-level touring shoes).
I seem to have skipped the horrendous experienced people always talk about with clipless. Five minutes buggering about at the beginning and then no issues at all. After two hours of riding and lots of clipping/unclipping at lights, no falls and I found myself clipping in automatically a lot of the time.
Is this because I've been using Power Grips (on track pedals) for the last few months, or something? Is the whole 'clipless is scary and you will fall over' thing just wildly exaggerated? I'm just not seeing it.
As an aside, playing around with setting stuff up as I ride has led me to a good seat post height, but my knees still feel a little off. Any recommendations on which direction I might want to fiddle with the cleats? Tried moving them back a way but it seemed worse - right now they're quite far forward though.
Most people go straight from flats to clipless.
I went via clips and straps and didn't stack it.
I've had more incidents moving to midfoot speedplay than clipless.
